Liberal Arts major to Engineering?

Can someone switch from a Liberal Arts Major ex: Sociology to an engineering field if they have not took calculus or physics in high school? I am planning to attend stonybrook as I was admitted into their eop program.

Yes, since you haven’t started school yet (unless Stony Brook has some sort of rule around switching majors, must colleges do not).

But a couple of points…

First, since you haven’t taken calculus and physics, it’s going to be hard for you to really know if Engineering is for you,so don’t be surprised if you decide it’s not and then switch majors again (this happens to a good number of “engineering” students, even if they took Calc and Physics in high school).

You may need to take a pre-calc course (Algebra and Trigonometry) before taking Calc 1, so discuss this with an adviser. This will put you behind another semester; but you can make it up by taking summer classes, etc. Perhaps you can take that class during the EOP Pre-Freshman Summer Academy?

Having taken Physics in high school helps, but it’s not required. It will require a bit of extra effort on your part (vs. other students who have already taken a physics class).

Good luck!
