That’s how we typically handle things. I know there is a chance we’ll get sick or need to change plans to help my 98 year old father. It costs a little more but gives peace of mind.
NOTE: In US, in recent years I have had trouble getting same-day cancel policy. (Best I can do seems to be 11:59pm prior day with Hilton, as Hilton Honors member.). But in London we’ve found that the prolific budget-ish chain Premier offers cancel up to 1pm same day. Daily rate for that flexibilty is a little higher, but it is still far less than some of the nicer hotels.
I’m so paranoid, I usually buy travel insurance. I’ve read of too many medical issues. I don’t want to get sick in a foreign country and have to seek treatment
It’s definitely a personal decision, I’m on the trip insurance side
I heard that this airport and flight slowdown is not supposed to affect international flights. Our flight next weekend does not have a domestic connection.
After this trip, we really need to look into a card with trip insurance
We have the Costco card, I’m happy with the cash back option but maybe insurance would be better
OMG, my husband of 40 years told me while we were on our cruise he wants to take ballroom dance lessons! I almost fell over. I loved, LOVED, to dance when I was younger and he would not step on the dance floor. Now that I’m old and overweight, he wants me to take lessons with him!!! Geeeze Louise - I don’t know what to say but guess I’ll look for a place to sign up!
Our local parks & rec run by the city used to have ballroom dancing. Haven’t checked because H and I have no sense of rhythm and can’t remember sequences. Arthur Murray still has some dance studios. My BIL took dancing.
Maybe taking dancing will rekindle romance and fun romantic events.
Our flight home from Paris yesterday was an adventure. The initial flight from Paris to Amsterdam was delayed due to a mechanical issue, so we missed the connection from AMS-home.
The flights KLM (Delta partner) booked us on were economy on Iceland Air to Iceland and then connecting home. Our original tickets were Premium Select on Delta. Let me tell you, Iceland air economy is nowhere near PS on Delta. We had to pay for everything other than coffee, tea, or water. Cramped seats. We arrived home a full 24 hours after leaving the Paris apartment.
I now have to see if Delta will do anything or if I should be talking to the travel insurance company.
Talk to the airline first; that’s probably what your insurance will say. You have the right to claim compensation from them since you are covered under EU passenger rights for delay.
Do it. We started ballroom dance lessons about 4 months before DD got married in 2018 and have continued. It’s really fun. It’s all about finding a teacher and studio you like. We take private lessons together, but DH also does group lessons.
Dance lessons are not in the cards for us. I did manage to sign up for two additional watercolor classes this winter. One is an introductory class and the second is more of a workshop with the same instructor I had previously. I am hopeful that some of the other students will sign up again as it was a very enjoyable group.
Today has been a round of errands and now I am going to bake a plum torte.
Yes, I think that’s what got him interested - our middle (his oldest) son is getting married next year plus we met a couple on the cruise who have been taking ballroom dance lessons for20 years and were always on the dance floor in the lounge after dinner. It was fun to watch them. I’m a little decrepit at 69 - I don’t move well. I can walk, but not much else. I tried skipping about 6 months ago assuming, of course I could skip….it took several tries to remember how to make my feet/legs move in the correct motion to make it happen and it wasn’t pretty. Will be good exercise though and perhaps we won’t look so bad at sons reception.
My husband has hated dancing from the day I met him. (Actually, from way before I met him.) We shuffled a bit at our wedding but other than that, he is – sadly – a firm No.
We are not retired yet, but we are empty nesters as are many of our friends. I do find it so interesting that myself or my wife have to be the one that makes the first move on making plans.
If anybody happens to be interested in a ranch in Bristol RI ($499,900), PM me. I just saw a post from a a FB friend who is a realtor near there. (LOL - unlike many of my CC friends, I actually have met her in real life… on a Viking river cruise).
@gpo613 I am wondering what your post means. Who else would make plans for you?
I am looking at about 12 communities. My kids don’t know much about what I am doing but it is for their sake, basically. These are CCRC’s with continuing care built in when needed, for the same or reasonably higher price.
I assumed he meant that they are the “organizer couple” who proposes group outings etc.
So I really get your statement about investigating CCRCs for your kids’ sake. Based on experiences with older friends/family (and the stories here on CC), it is a high priority for me to NOT become a burden to our kids in our later years.
ICYMI – Scary. DH and I just decided not to join a local care community because their operating expenses have exceeded their operating income for two years.
