Like tiny houses? Try tiny dorms :)

At College of Wooster and soon, College of Charleston. They look pretty darn cool!

Common rooms are not tiny, just the sleeping “pods”.

They don’t look that small. My kids have had singles that small - or smaller.

What I don’t see are exterior windows. Perhaps they are there and just not pictured as I think it would be needed for egress. No exterior window would be a deal breaker for me.

However, the very small rooms are attached to decent sized shared common areas.

@doschicos no exterior windows in the sleeping pods - they wanted to keep the windows for the (as I noted in post #2) large common rooms.

Hmmm…that wouldn’t fly in some jurisdictions. I thought sleeping quarters were required to have exterior egress. I, personally, also like a space where one can always view the outside.

To me the window is the difference between a room and a walk-in closet.

Sorry but I would not be pleased with that for my kids.

I think the idea of “sleeping pods” is genius. D is hoping for a room next year that features a sleeping loft just slightly larger than a single mattress that is tucked away under a skylight window and separate from the room itself. Unfortunately, there are only something like 12 of those rooms, so the chances of getting one is pretty slim.

Looks bigger than my kid’s apartment in NYC …LOL.

I’d love to see the sizes of the houses of the administrators that are so generously offering “tiny living” to kids forking over tuition to these schools.

In Wooster’s case, the “tiny dorm rooms” come with large common areas with huge windows (and the sleeping pod has a window into the common room so there is natural light) According to the article upperclassmen are snatching them up in room draw, they’re very hard to get into. I get the appeal of sleeping in a fairly small space and otherwise hanging out in a large semi-private one.

Very cool!

I have to say, while I like the concept in general, I didn’t care for not having a window to the outside, and I also don’t like all the open storage. It feels like, if you were sitting in your room and kept the door open, everyone’s going to see all of your stuff.

I like how there is an Ohio State flag up in one of the photos of the common room.

The lofted single makes it less than ideal for a visiting bf or gf.

Everyone is a buckeye in Ohio whether they go to OSU or not!

Very clever!

I don’t think those pods are all that small. I lived in a dorm that if you cut the sleeping quarters in half it would be about that size. That setup really reminds me of pods set up in a prison.

I would trade sleeping space for entertaining space in a heartbeat.

My son’s single his sophomore year was seriously no bigger than those pods.

^ apparently so would most Wooster students.

It’s true the “tiny” aspect is a little overblown, as I look at the virtual tour these rooms have very high ceilings and all that space seems to be used. They have a loft feeling.

I think it’s great. My son just moved in at UF, and one of his favorite things so far is meeting in the lounge for video game tournaments LOL. His roommate is very nice and they get along well so far, but I think it would be nice to have your own small sleeping pod and then have the big common area to hang out. Maybe this will be the wave of the future!
