Hi CC,
One of my friends got into M&T ED, and one of my best friends finished applying RD earlier to M&T, also. Penn is his dream school, but he decided to EA another school to be safe.

Assuming that my best friend is extremely qualified (accepted to Stanford EA, for example) and had good essays (I thought they were amazing), is there a realistic shot he could get M&T, too? He thinks that Penn would not accept two students from the same high school to M&T. I think he’s wrong but he asked me to make the thread.
Good luck other RDers! <3

It depends on the program and when you apply. Huntsman and M&T have the biggest classes (around 50 for each class). The LSM program has only 25. Also keep in mind that all dual degree programs admit a large number of students ED. More than any other program, the dual degree programs want students whose top choice is the dual degree program. Students who apply EA somewhere else “to be safe” aren’t usually what these programs are looking for. Additionally, although each dual degree program is searching for the best applicants, they do seem to have students from all over the country. As such, I think it is less likely for your friend to get accepts RD if someone from the same high school was admitted ED. It’s not impossible, but it is very unlikely.

I think adcoms generally look more into regions than specific schools, so in that sense he should mostly be worried that one less spot from your region is taken. It might hurt a little bit overall, but generally it shouldn’t make a difference in deciding whether he’s in or out.

Thanks guys. I think it was really clear in his essays that M&T is his top choice and that Penn is his dream school.

Rads4cure, his backup is Stanford, lol.

Hume15, that’s better news–our high school is a residential early college program so the ED applicant and my friend actually live in different cities. Is there a way we can find out if the cities are in the same region? They’re typically 45 minutes to an hour’s drive apart.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. One M&T student is a major accomplishment for a school. Two would be amazing. Good luck to your best friend, and to you. :)

It’s pretty rare for the dual degree programs to accept two people from the same region let along the same high school. I think it would be a real long shot for a kid to get accepted RD when someone from their same high school class was accepted ED but it’s worth trying no matter what.

Just an update
My friend DID get into M&T RD!! (as well as Princeton… :))
Another senior from my high school got LSM (as well as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Dartmouth!)
A few more got into Penn’s CAS.
We’re so excited for all of them. We hope this thread can help people like us in deciding to apply to these programs. M&T CAN take at least two people from the same high school.
Thanks for all the responses. :)
