Likely Letter Stats

I noticed that there wasn’t a thread yet for those that received likely letters, so I wanted to start one that would also include stats for those who are curious about the people that receive likely letters. I borrowed the template from another forum, so please let me know if you want any additional information. Also, I want to remind everyone that it is a holistic process and a lot of the people who receive the likely letters are recipients of a blessing from God, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t receive one. After all, Harvard only sent out 100 non-athletic likelies this year.

Volunteer/Community service: Various Mission Trips, Key Club Volunteer Hours, Nursing Home Visits, Food Bank Work, Angel Food Ministries Distribution

Summer Activities: Trip abroad to Spain after freshman year, but nothing too big outside of work and summer school

Essays: Common App Essay: I reflected on my long list of EC’s and mentioned how I decided sophomore year to cut down on my EC’s in order to focus and derive pleasure from my activities/ Supplement: I described how C. S. Lewis’s novels have shaped my life, especially the Chronicles of Narnia, also making the connection between our church denomination (both Anglican).

Teacher Recommendation: Two great recommendations, one from a Physics and AP Bio teacher, the other from an AP World History and Dual Credit U.S. History professor. Both really highlighted my personal characteristics and were very well written

Counselor Rec: Fantastic! I have grown to know my counselor the last two years, so she had a good idea of who I was as a person

Additional Rec: (I’m not sure if they reached the office before my app was reviewed, but I’ll assume they were) One from my Youth Director and one from my Piano Instructor, both really good and both showing sides of me that aren’t necessarily seen in the classroom.

Interview: Awesome! It lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes and my interviewer and I instantly clicked and had great conversations. He said that I was well-qualified and he wished me luck. My favorite part of the process. :)

Other

State (if domestic applicant): Texas

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: State

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: Upper Middle Class

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (Diverse Caribbean background)

Reflection

Strengths: Well-rounded, a little bit of interest in all of the major quadrants, strong SAT I scores, strong GPA, Class Rank, Personal Essays that weren’t overly complex, and prayers!

Weaknesses: SAT II scores, not as much volunteer work as I’d like to have, only a few AP scores (although this is limited due to school size)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I prayed more than I ever thought I could! Haha, I believe that God led me to the acceptance and he kept me on pace throughout high school, always working hard, yet not obsessively trying to be the best. I think they liked my well-rounded resume and the fact that I tried a lot of things and had at least a small amount of success in most of them. I was also very eager to get accepted to Harvard, so they might have sensed it in my application somehow.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Auburn, Likely Letter from Dartmouth and Likely Letter Equivalent from Rice, I am still awaiting notification from Brown, Cornell, and Columbia, however, Harvard is my first choice.

In the end, just be you and do the best you can do! You never know what might happen. When your dreams come true, you will have the best feeling ever, so hold onto that and work hard for what you want to achieve. :)

Lol, we have basically the exact same ethnicity and attitude. Congrats bro! Even though my stats weren’t this great, i’m still hoping that I get in.

Best of luck to you! Is Harvard your first choice?

Sent from my SPH-D700 using CC App

Jg, what exactly is a SPH-D700?

Yeah, actually it is. Lets talk more in PM.

jged- Congrats!!!

Thanks guys! And I have a Samsung Epic 4g, so I’m not sure why it says that haha.

It seems that likely letters are normally for URMs, recruited athletes, or one in a million scholars.

^Pretty much

OP, when did you submit your app? I wonder if most of the likelies went to people who submitted their apps early, because admissions officers read in the order of submission.

^Might be true. I sent in my app on January 1st and received my likely on March 15th; the letter was dated March 1st, though.

I sent in my app December 24th, so pretty late, and the letter was sent on February 15th, so I’m guessing they are close to finishing their first round of looking at applications.

More stats?

I applied late October and got my likely letter late December. I don’t think timing has that much to do with it though. I think Harvard is pretty good at looking past things like that.
Did you guys get a phone call as well?

Are you an athlete?

^Lizzie, Yeah, I received a phone call and then the letter. Also, I’m curious as well, are you an athlete?

Objective:

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): First of 300ish maybe?

AP (place score in parenthesis): We only have 3 APs and they can only be taken in senior year. I’m currently taking AP European History and AP Calc AB

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit, Senior of Distinction, Most Likely to Be Rich Like Oprah (I totally put this on my app, too. I’m such a dork. ;-P)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Theatre: 40+ shows (musicals and plays) with 20+ leads. Wrote and directed two short and one full length production. (So… director, playwright, actress, props mistress, spot tech, sound tech, stage manager… whatever needs doing.) Also in local theatre’s show choir.
Band: Concert Band freshman year (1st chair alto sax/section leader) Symphonic Band sophomore year ( 2nd chair tenor saxophone) Marching band freshman and sophomore
Other: Mock Trial (Charter member and attorney), Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter (Co founder and Vice President), Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council, NHS, 30+ club, Junior Classical League (Historicus)

Volunteer/Community service: 200+ hours of teaching youth theatre camps

Summer Activities: University courses, Europe trip, theatre, and theatre camps.

Essays: Common App about road tripping with a friend to escape, Supplement about why my room is so darned messy. Both fairly unique and decently written.

Teacher Recommendation: One very generic, one absolutely glowing.

Counselor Rec: Probably fairly generic but got the point across that I take the toughest courseload, etc.

Additional Rec: From my theatre director. Very nice.

Interview: I actually scheduled an on campus interview when I visited Harvard in August. I really hit it off with my interviewer. We had a strange love of Helen Keller in common. He ended up walking me to the Helen Keller monument on campus and recommending several books to me. I handmade him a thank you note (with a Helen Keller quote, no less ;-)). I think this interview had a LOT to do with my receiving a likely.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): Louisiana

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Medium-large public. Few APs, not a lot of emphasis on higher education. I’m sure it wouldn’t be considered competitive to Harvard. I doubt they’ve even heard of it.

Ethnicity: Caucasian

Gender: F

Income Bracket: 30,000

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Geographic advantage? Low income?

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, interviews, ECs… subjective stuff.

Weaknesses: Where do I start? SAT IIs, lack of APs, lack of awards, non competitive high school, I’m kind of just an average person. =P

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The grace of God, pretty much? I mean I have no idea. Very, very pleased though. I think my interview did a lot, and I know my application reader did theatre and mock trial in high school as well, so that probably helped.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t know most yet. Deferred Brown ED. Accepted to LSU and Drexel (safties)
General Comments: I still can’t believe it.

Your theatre EC and CR score are very impressive! Congrats!

^aleader

Thanks for posting! Your stats are impressive and your passion for theatre is awesome! I wish you the best. :)

i am an athlete with a 32 ACT (36 reading, 35 english, 31 science, 26 math), 2100 SAT, 670lit SAT2, 480math1 SAT2 (i was on very high doses of pain medicine after surgery when i took my SAT2’s, this was explained to likely letter board), no GPA because my graduating high school is ungraded, however at my previous schools i had a 4.0, 4 different high schools in 5 years of high school, glowing recommendations, incongruous transcript, and, luckily, a “full recruit” status. i sent in my application and interviewed in october and got my likely letter 2 weeks later. the likely letter board meets every tuesday unless they have another issue to attend to. i got a phonecall from the woman that i interviewed with, and then received my letter a few days later.
