My school recently enacted a rule that students can only hold one leadership position in any of our 11 clubs. For reference, this means things like president, vp, etc of a club, any editor in chief positions for the magazine, basically anything you are elected or appointed to do thats beyond the responsibility of a normal club member. The reason for this is that several teachers allegedly stated that they heard from students that they felt intimidated to join clubs because several students hold multiple leadership positions.
Unfortunately, I am one of those students who holds multiple leadership positions.
Since I am one of those students, my opinion is obviously biased. Id like to hear other opinions. For reference, I was either elected, appointed, or founded all clubs I hold a leadership position in 100% fair and ethical methods. But my question: should we be focusing on giving every kid an opportunity, or if a student wins an election (even for multiple positions in different clubs) its the luck of the draw?
If your school enacts this, turn lemons to lemonade – and write an essay on how the policy forced you to prioritize and maybe do a better job on whatever club you end up leading. And then do a GREAT job for that club.
Thats definitely a good perspective, thank you! I’ve always done a goob job, but I’m a big dreamer so I always feel I can do better. There definitely could be a silver lining
I am the president of two clubs and the vice president of one club at my school, but if I were a student at your school, I would support the policy.
It’s a well known fact to any student who has participated in a club election that a popular student will obviously be more likely to win an election than a less popular but more qualified student. This doesn’t happen every single time (and you may be a very qualified student who is capable of running many clubs), but it occurs often, usually in very small or very large organizations, creating a certain group of students who run many of the clubs on campus. Thus, having it so that a student may only be in charge of one club allows other, less popular students to have a chance in the election.
Also, there are many people who want leadership positions just because of college applications; they have no desire to help the club in any way. They look at a leadership position as a way to boost their college apps rather than a way to help the club, and thus they will try to obtain as many positions as they can. This policy would help decrease this population and increase the number of dedicated members in the club, as students who simply want a leadership position will either leave the club or decide to actually participate.
Therefore, I do agree with this policy, but I also would agree with increasing the number of positions to two or having a system where students could take on more positions after an evaluation if need be.
I will say that I go to online school, so I will say we are VERY lucky in that we dont have the problem of the popularity contest. I’ve lost elections because I wasn’t the most qualified but had gone there for 4 years. So Im very lucky that that is our policy. Thank you for your response!
Do you think it would be better thar instead of enacting a policy where students cannot hold multiple positions, we enact one where if they don’t participate in a 2 month probation period, they are out? This was a problem in another club and I was so annoyed that no one could do anything. I would just hate, Not even for myself, but my friends who have worked so hard to have to forfeit when they’ve done over 20 projects in a club and surpassed every expectation and roadblock.
