linen sets

Has anyone ordered linen from the college service? We got a pamphlet from a service that provides sets that include an extra long comforter, sheets, blankets, towels, hamper, etc. I wonder if the quality is any good? I would like to hear from someone who has actually purchased anything from them. Thanks.

It seems that all colleges have such a program. We found it to be much cheaper to shop the sales and use the coupons at Linens & Things, Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc. Girls especially like to pick out their colors!

We heard that the quality was good–it just wasn’t the right thing for us. We will not do it for our S, either. Did you get something like that from Duke, Candace?? S got his BIG mailing today, but I did not see any literature about that program?? We will be focusing on Blue items for S’s room!

You don’t need extra-long. While the beds are extra-long, they are extra thin, and normal sheets fit on them quite well, even with an egg crate.

Yes Irishforever, we did get a mailing from Duke about linen sets. I don’t know if we will order from them. Thanks, Ariesathena, I didn’t know that regular sheets would fit. My son wants to get a Duke comforter and it does not come in an extra long size. Is an egg crate necessary? Also, the sets come with towels and I don’t think I want to get those anyway, because my son wants fun designs, not just solids. I called Bed, Bath and Beyond and they said that they do carry extra long sheets and a few comforters in stock. So, I am not sure what we will get yet. Thanks! CJ

Candace–I’ll have to look for that mailing, as S may want the Duke comforter. Don’t worry about the comforter being extra long–our D didn’t have an XL one, and it was fine. Realistically, they won’t be making the bed to look ready for company on a daily basis!! Plus they usually have a couple of pillows, so the comforter can be pulled down just a bit longer, and it won’t really be noticeable.

Our D had an egg crate her first year, and loved it…but they were banned from the res. halls after that–they are a fire hazard, and give off a toxic smoke (one thread started by maize & blue has some great info from a fireman about this!). There are other things like mattress toppers (like another extra thick comforter) to put on top of the mattress before putting on the sheets, in which case you really do need the extra long. Some XL Bed-in-a-bag sets are also on the market (but not with Duke comforters!). Make sure you get to the B B & B store before the end of June for the best selection–they tend to sell out quickly of the XL items! Hope your S is as excited as ours!!

an Egg crate is extremely necessary. I don’t think i’d be able to sleep without it! I picked up my sheet set at kmart in a pack for about 15 bucks… and it’s just awesome. theyre fully cotton sheets so theyre very comfortable.

I just got a JC Penney catalog with the sheet sets on the back cover, lots of colors(18 of them)230 thread count for those that keep track,14.99 Twin and 19.99 X Long. Online its JCPenney.com/homeexpressions.

230 thread count? (Shudders)

;)

I got my son’s sheets off ebay, but did find I didn’t need the extra long. and the mattress was like a little rock!

The extra long sheets we ordered last year from the catalogue all the colleges send out get “pilly” very fast - of poor quality for the cost.
