I am a high school junior from out of state, and I have heard that OSU has exceptional departments in language and linguistics. Has anyone had contact w/ these depts before?

I go to OSU, and my major when I was an incoming freshman was Linguistics. Now, I’m quite involved with the languages at OSU. Do you have any specific student questions? I can refer you to the Linguistics Professor I had my first quarter, who happens to be the Undergrad chair. Also, this year a new BA/MA Linguistics in 5 yrs was approved fyi.

wow… 5yr BA/MA sounds pretty sweet. Are there a lot of profs who are into historical linguistics? BTW, do you have an idea of how many other languages one would be able to take/major/minor in while taking the 5yr BA/MA path w/out being completely overworked?

Don’t know if you’ve seen this yet, but it is the site for Historical Linguistics at OSU: http://www.ling.ohio-state.edu/fields/hist.php
Assuming you pursue the 5 year plan, you could specialize in this. I should also note that taking graduate classes as an undergrad is easy to do (schedule wise), especially if you are in the Honors Program. Don’t let the high numbers scare you, it just means that the classes are more deep than wide in the scope of the subject.

As for how many languages to major/minor while at OSU, that’s entirely up to you. Of course, getting some of the General Education Courses (GECs) out of the way with post-secondary or AP/IBs makes scheduling for other elective classes pretty easy. With 5 years at OSU, I don’t see why you couldn’t double major in a language and also have a minor or two (depends on which languages you’re talking about). It really just depends on how much you can get out of your high school language program to place higher in the intro/intermediate classes.

“…Completely overworked…” This again, is up to you. Some languages you can actually learn with an individualized study program, no “classes” to go to, just tutor/test sessions at your leisure. Complete the class as fast/slow as you want. Also, look out for the accelerated summer programs that let you compete 15-20 credits of a language, if you are that intense. Most linguistics majors that I know also have another major because of the scheduling, other interests, or job marketability. Also, keep in mind that you don’t need to learn any foreign languages if you don’t want to! Linguists can be knowledgeable in just one language, English, if they so choose!

Hope I helped-

thanks very much for the info… I’ll definitely keep all of this in mind come application time!

kcarls, I posted some information for you on the thread “chances”. you may want to check it out.

Chelsea, we were in the same class!! Also, I’m graduating a year early, too! Small world, huh?

haha! that’s crazy. see, ohio state really isn’t that big! :)
