Liquid Water on Mars!!

What does everyone think of the stunning news regarding the new evidence for liquid water on Mars? Very exciting!!

I imagine people are already working on a way to get it to California.

I’m so excited, and only wish we would put more money into space exploration so more of this type of thrilling discovery would occur during my lifetime. Now I await news of the little green men!

I think they have big, four-armed green men on Mars…I mean, Barsoom.

I think this is going to spur space travel…some company is gonna build robotic vehicles that go to mars, collect water, come back to earth, so they can sell it for a million bucks a bottle as miracle martian water, guaranteed to cure all ills…

As soon as the news was released, Google changed its doodle - it is hilarious.

Since they were little boys, my two sons have wanted to be part of the “Mars missions team”. One wants to help design the spacecraft and the other wants to actually go there (gulp). This news is beyond exciting for them, and I really hope this discovery will renew our interest in space exploration.

One of my guilty pleasure pastimes is to read conspiracy blogs and forums. Not ones like “Obama is the anti-Christ and inputting chips in us” but rather “the government is run by lizardmen” kind of things. So I knew this would spark quite some discussion out there and oh boy I was NOT disappointed!

My favorite one thus far has been out of the “moon is a spaceship with aliens that have been watching us for hundreds of thousands of years” camp: there isn’t really water on Mars. It’s a high tech illusion by the aliens in the moon/spaceship to test our reaction to the real possibility of life on Mars. Next, they’ll illusion some microbial life for us and work up from there.

For me though, I think it’s wonderful. I think there will be major developments in exploration of Mars in the next 10 years or so and this is a great catalyst for encouraging the public to start thinking about space exploration again.

This is really the surprising part. I didn’t realize it had warm parts.

Though I was under the impression that the seasons happened because of Earth’s tilt, which Mars doesn’t have. I don’t feel like researching this myself but can someone give a few sentence explanation of why Mars has seasons?

I’m guessing the liquid water means terraforming efforts could start.

Is there the possibility that the earth will be destroyed by living creatures brought back by the spaceships visiting Mars?

If we could get enough people up there, we could warm it even more.

I’m not too excited about space exploration, other than to the extent of militarily defending ourselves. I don’t think the economics of colonization make much sense.

I saw an article that made the interesting point that if Mars has a biosphere, we need to be careful not to inadvertently mess it up with Earth germs.

Capricorn One…come in, Capricorn One. Are you there, Capricorn One?

“Is there the possibility that the earth will be destroyed by living creatures brought back by the spaceships visiting Mars?”

I think the opposite is more likely. I heard a group of NASA scientists talking about the great care that will have to be taken to make sure that spacecraft entering Martian biomes are nearly completely sterile, much harder to accomplish than one might think.

Not so. Both the Earth and Mars have similar tilts of their rotational axes with respect to their orbital planes.

Planning to go see The Martian this weekend! Excited

Apparently nothing to see here. A certain well-known conservative commentator has concluded the discovery of water on Mars is part of some larger plan by the Obama administration “to advance the leftist agenda.”

It was kind of funny, Ridley Scott was complaining (tongue in Cheek) about NASAs timing, since in the movie “The Martian” it says Mars has no water lol. (obviously, given where the water is and what it is, likely wouldn’t do him any good anyway, probably far away from where the astronaut supposedly is on mars.
