List of Colleges that recruit URM's, specifically latina/latino students

are there any colleges that do recruit urms? +being close to being a national hispanic scholar ? I want to be in a community with a fair amount of latino students. I was reading about the college Wellesley and it said they have only 9% Asian students but 13% Latino students so are they recruiting latino students or do a lot of latinos apply there? and similarly Bowdoin has 10% asian and 14% hispanic.

Possibly a lot of students from California apply to those places so maybe thats why

A lot of LACs give some preference in admission to Hispanic students. Lots of them have free fly-ins in junior year to get URMs to campus so they can check out the school.

The list in this thread is a couple years old, but this might be useful as a list of URM fly-ins. Check the school websites for how to apply.

The colleges that specifically target Latino students for recruiting are often those with smaller percentages of Latino students.

I just find it odd that at colleges like Bowdoin and Wellesley, there are larger amounts of hispanic students accepted and applying. I feel like Asian students are almost always overrepresented so its kind of odd that there are a lot more hispanic and in some cases just as many black students as there are Asian. Would anyone be willing to comment on that?

Maybe Asians are more attracted to larger research universities rather than small LACs?

Consider your base figures. Asian Americans comprise ~6% of the U.S. population, Hispanic/Latino Americans ~17%.

It’s true that at many LACs, Asian students are not over represented. In general, almost any LAC is going to be interested in a well-qualified URM, of any race. The most selective LACs, such as those you mentioned, can pick and choose who they like. You will find much more diversity at schools like Amherst, Pomona, Williams and the like than you will at less selective LACs.

I don’t know if there are LACs specifically recruiting Latino/a students. It’s probably more to do with targeting areas where they are more likely to reach URM students. They will be recruiting first generation too. If you want to apply to those schools, understand that they are very comprtitive and the students are not just there because of their race.

Wellesley college has many, many asians. Those numbers aren’t correct. They have 22% listed as Asian and 13% International - which for sure includes many more Asians. It does have a vibrant, diverse community.

As far as schools that have good Latino communities, I would look at anything near a city or in Texas or California or Florida. City based schools tend to have larger Latino communities - but not necessarily because they are recruiting them.

Wesleyan students of color (including internationals):

Asian/Asian American - 23%
Black/African American - 11%
Latino/Hispanic - 13%
Native or Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander - 1.5%

You have to apply to Florida International University!!

Here is a list of Hispanic Serving Institutions. Most of these will have sizable (25% or more) Hispanic populations.

U New Mexico and U Central Florida are on this list.

Re: #11

Definitions of “Hispanic serving institutions” include having 25% of higher Hispanic/Latino students.

But note that many of them do not actively specially recruit Hispanic/Latino students (beyond general recruiting activities). For example, many colleges in California have large Hispanic/Latino enrollments and hence are HSIs by default because they are in California, where about half of high school graduates these days are Hispanic/Latino. Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas are similar in this respect.
