My favorites always start this way “I have a VERY unusual situation”…when really it’s not unusual at all.

“Most conservative/liberal colleges?”
“Is (college) too conservative/liberal?” (or “I am conservative/liberal; will I fit in?”)
“Why all the hate for (college)?”
“Colleges with attractive girls/guys?”
“Best dorm at (college)?”
“Colleges for surfers/skiers?”
“Can I bring my (musical instrument) to college?”
“Should I go to community college and transfer?”

Threads about cooking or recipes. (love these, though!)
“Parents of the class of ___” (these are great to have, but they are perpetual)
Games on the high school life forum.
Threads about laundry and problematic roommates on the college life forum. (well, I guess, it is “college life”; what do we expect?)

“HELP ME PLEEEAAAZZE!!!1!!11” (no explanation given in title)
(And “URGENT!!!” when it really isn’t.)

Seasonal threads: (fun reads, though!)
“List of commencement speakers”
“Summer reading books list”
“Colleges still accepting off waitlist”
“Colleges still taking applications”

Especially when posted by a HS freshman obsessing because they haven’t yet identified their dream school.

Not a thread, but a recurring post:

“I haven’t read all the posts in this thread, but I would like to inject a comment that has already been made ten times.”

Hunt,
That’s already been posted here 10 times!

jk ;)

Also followed by snarky comments from students that the stats are fine, but the fact the OP asked such a question with such great stats means they are terrible people who will be weeded out by adcoms.

On the MIT threads:

“MOOOLLLLLLIIIIEEEE!!!”
“MOLLLIIEE HELP ME!”
etc.

(Mollie is the designated mom/moderator on the MIT threads.)

“Do I need to take calculus?”

And then, around November – “I’m getting a C/D in calculus, will it hurt my chances?”

Another good one is the Hidden Chance thread. The title has something outrageous to hook people but doesn’t mention anything about chances, but when you open it it ends up being a chance thread.

I’m sick of the perpetual Duke vs Michigan vs Berkeley arguments that pop up whenever one of the three is recommended to someone.

You mean because Berkeley is great for grad students but horrible for undergrads?

How about:

What is the best “public Ivy”?
What is the best “little Ivy”?

(what are public and little Ivies???)

…or Midwest Ivy, or Mid-South Ivy or …

It’s interesting to me that the more competitive a school is, the more “chances” threads there are…and fewer questions about the school, life there, or general ???. It seems like people somehow assume that the school has GOT to be awesome since the acceptance rates are so low, that they don’t need to ask anything else? Ivy-colored glasses, maybe?

And then there are the threads that certain frequent posters on CC regularly hijack to extol (yet again) the virtues of their alma mammies. (You know who you are!)

OMG!! This post has me cracking up… too funny!!! Fireandrain love yours the most…

I am surprised (substitute shocked, upset, angry,…) that school X gave me such a lousy aid package especially every other post about that school X is about their lousy aid package.

I thought that School X promised to meet my demonstrated need, how come they have so much loans in the package or how come they define need differently?

My favorite

Am I sunk for the rest of my life because I did not attend an Ivy League school?

or some variant of this

I plan to visit 25 colleges in 6 days, is it too much?
I plan to apply to 24 colleges, is it enough?
How long should my essay be?
What are the right essay topics?

What branch of engineering should I go into? In which field can I make the highest salary? Which kind of engineering is the hardest?

Or…If I get a great financial aid package at my local within walking distance state college, can I use that as leverage to get a higher award at a prestigious private school?
