List of Perpetual CC Threads

People asking for advice about schools / admissions / etc. describing their intended major…

“biology / pre-med”
“psychology / pre-med”
“neuroscience / pre-med”
“biomedical engineering / pre-med”
“game design”
“environmental science”

1) Those who start by saying “this is NOT one of those what are my chances threads” …and then ask what their chances for admissions are.

2) Those who start a thread on very specialized schools asking what all admissions or even the school involves when it is obvious they have not done ANY research about that particular college.

3) Someone who’s son/daughter did NOT get admitted to a particular school who uses every oppoortunity to bash that school for any number of reasons.

~How can I recruit a CC cabal to dog pile U.S. college admissions?

~Why doesn’t U.S. college admissions work like that of other countries?

~How can I sue the Ivy League for rejecting me/my son/ my daughter? (or, if I don’t get into the Ivy League)

~What are “good” Ecs for the ivy league?

~How can I get community service brownie points without actually having to care 2 figs for anyone but myself?

~How do these activities “look”?

~How can I force my teacher who hates me to write a good recommendation?

~Why don’t I (my family and I / my CC buds and I) get to decide admissions policies?

~How can I lie on my application and not get caught?

(And thanks to JHS in post 48 for reminding me):

~Which colleges will ‘get” me into medical school? (And its variant: Which colleges have the biggest grade inflation so that I can get into medical school?)

URGENT: Got caught cheating on test; also failed Junior Year ______; how can I still get into Harvard?

Oh, and another favorite:

Will saying I want to major in something really obscure like theology/classics increase my chances of getting into Harvard?

(Then the OP goes on to explain how he/she actually wants to study biochemistry/neuroscience and all of his/her SAT IIs, APs and ECs are geared toward that interest, with nary a whiff of classics/theology-related activities on his/her resume. But don’t worry kids, saying you want to major in theology when your subject tests are in Biology E, Biology M, Chemistry and Math II and your main EC is biological research is totes believable.)

USC v UCLA

I’m an 18 year old freshman and my parents will NOT pay for college. Can I just rent an apartment, declare myself independent and NOT put their info on the FAFSA/Profile so I can get more aid?

Asking for advice, then being rude when they don’t care for the advice given

Asking for a list of safety schools without giving any information as to interests, budget, or geography

Bed Toppers!!!

Very true in post 87…someone asks for our honest opinion and obviously all we have to go on is what they post here. Then when several people all pick up on something and make a comment about it the person asking the original question gets defensive, rude or belittles those offering the advice…duhhhh.

“I made a 1900 on the SAT, but I’m going to get that up to 2200 - which schools should I apply to?”

Or…posts that start out…and then add info as the responses come in (thus very much changing the original question).

Ex.

  1. I need significant financial aid.
    2.Then they add…my dad owns a business.
  2. Do our rental properties count?
  3. We just had an inheritance from Grandma.
  4. I have a college trust.
  5. My parents earn $200,000 a year.

Just give ALL the info up front!!

How about all of those posts asking for which schools to apply to, but without specifying any cost constraints, which there typically are after questioning by those replying to the initial post?

Sad to say it is back again:

“Where can I get a loan that does’t require a co-signer? I need just $15k more to pay for freshman year.”

Happymom…the one I saw…the student needed $40K…and the perpetual question that goes with this “is this TOO much in loans?”

– Stanford is better than Berkeley

– Berkeley is better than Stanford

– Is _________ (Ivy) worth it ?

“How much money will FAFSA give me?”

And for the umpteenth time…

International student needs full ride.

My favorite also includes those ‘mother hen’ types who think theirs is the only valid opinion on a topic or who take over a specific forum and go around scolding those who have different views then theirs…how childish !!!

… and oh, by the way, I’m too lazy to do the research to figure out what schools offer scholarships for internationals, so could you please give me a list.

Or the posters who create their own personal threads to ask the same thing over and over an OVER, who then don’t listen to the same advice given over and over and OVER. The poster makes excuses for the things they were advised to do and didn’t, yet somehow wants the outcome to be different.
