Which colleges and Universities are on the quarter system

Stanford University

There are some serious questions about the value of quarter long courses raised by what cognitive science has taught us about learning.

In fact, cog sci seems to be suggesting that semesters are not even long enough to have true, lasting mastery of the subjects we study.

As with many things cog sci, things are not quite concrete, but ask the psych or cog sci professors at your school about the value of these things and they may have interesting answers.

I’m of two minds-- it’d be tough to be scheduled different than friends and on an accelerated pace, but I certainly would have liked to take 33% more classes.

I don’t know how many schools have a plan like Dartmouth’s, where during soph and junior years you can take off any quarter you like. This, IMO, gives an extreme advantage for internships as you are available when few others are.

UC’s are on the quarter system

University of Chicago

Drexel, I actually like the idea of the quarter system. I won’t have to be trapped in any awful classes with any professors I don’t necessarily like for too long.

I’d love to see CCers try to list all the quarter system universities. One study reports that 21% of four year colleges are on the quarter system, and 5% are on the trimester system.

According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities, there are 2618 four year colleges in the US, so roughly 680 run on the quarter/trimester system. Stanford, Dartmouth, Chicago, Drexel, and the UCs (-UCB & Merced) make 11. Only 669 more, guys!

Carleton, Caltech, UChicago, Northwestern, Dartmouth, Stanford, most of the UC system (other than Berkeley), UWashington, UOregon and Oregon State, Union, Lawrence, Kalamazoo, College of the Atlantic, Knox, etc.
