I would add a big fat caveat that these colleges consider assets as well as income in calculating financial need.

I would also emphasize that families intrigued by these college advertisements should use college Net Price Calculators to see an estimate applicable to their actual financial situation and not make the mistake of assuming that anything is “free.”

One last asterisk, “tuition” does not include room and board and fees.

There is nothing special or new about what these colleges are giving for financial aid. They are just keeping their aid up with inflation. There are probably plenty of other top schools that haven’t made such announcements, er, advertisements, about their aid per income level that probably give similar aid packages.

Okay -I love this thread but >200K means more than 200K.

All your signs are greater than not less than.

Oopsy, I corrected it now. :man_facepalming:

Thank you - I KNEW what you meant - but my brain was throwing a tantrum —and also a big thanks! This is an awesome list

These are new adds but there are others from Lehigh and Rice to more. And other state specific examples like Rutgers.

I think the title “schools going tuition-free” is misleading. These schools have offered tuition-free aid for students below a certain income level (with “typical assets”) for many years now. What’s new isn’t the policy itself - only that the income threshold has been raised.

Of course, in reality, most of these colleges already had some family income and assets threshold where their financial aid grants exceeded tuition – but they did not publicize that previously (though it may have been findable by using their net price calculators). But now it seems that publicizing that has become more common, regardless of how much or how little the actual threshold has changed.

I don’t know about most people - but these notices did impact the list we made. It can be challenging to do the NPC calculator for every college under consideration –and at least one of these new articles impacted our list. It might be advertising -but it was helpful

This is a list thread where we can add existing + new schools that offer tuition-free options for low-income students. Let me know of some other schools out there and I’ll be adding it to the list in the original post.

@tsbna44, can you provide more info about these schools and the options they offer (+ a link to their official site)? I can add them to the list.

Here are more schools with similar programs.

But many private schools are providing very generous aid already but not making waves like this. Checking out the NPC of Willams, Amherst, Haverford, Wesleyan, it seems family with 100K income may pay very little, could be very close to tuition free.

Also, some not-so-low-income students, since $200,000 is not ordinarily considered low-income.

University of California says that “Most California families that earn up to $100,000 receive enough grant and scholarship funds to cover their UC tuition.” Blue and Gold | UC Admissions . This statement is not new, although the threshold amount has been adjusted upward over the years.

I would add Rice, which guarantees at least free tuition (if not more) for families earning <$140k, and Colby, which does the same for families with income up to $200k.

“Through this program, admitted students from families earning less than $150,000 per year receive full tuition without loans. Students from families earning under $75,000 annually also receive support covering room and board. Transfer students may qualify as well, provided they apply for need-based aid and meet the eligibility guidelines. Additional funding for study abroad, internships, and personal expenses is available based on demonstrated need.”

And need blind - many aren’t.
