LIT essay prompts

Question for LIT majors or people with relevant experience: if you’re supposed to choose one of several prompts for an essay but have the option of devising your own prompt, is there a difference in regards to how professors treat essays with self-written prompts? do they grade harsher or more critically because you didn’t pick one of their own, or do they respect the notion that you came up with and addressed your own question? i understand that this obviously varies from professor to professor, but i’m interested in just a general consensus.
