"Little Three" Gaining Recognition as "Best Sports Tradition"

Williams, Amherst and Wesleyan have been playing each other since 1910, 10Best said. While they don’t compete for national championships, the competition between the three small schools “just might be the country’s oldest intercollegiate athletic conference without any membership changes.”

I get that it is nice for LACs to be recognized – but there are so many wonderful college sports traditions – why does there need to be one voted “the best”?

With all due respect to the “Little Three,” the Haverford vs. Swarthmore rivalry goes back to at least 1894. The football rivalry ended in 1971 when Haverford ended their football program, but the two schools still compete for the Hood Trophy which is awarded to the school that has the most wins versus the other in all sports. Perhaps we can call this rivalry, “The Tiny Two.”
