Hi everyone, I have recently been accepted into both schools and cannot decide. I got a huge scholarship from LIU Post so both colleges with cost about the same, so I don’t know which one to choose. I will plan on studying accounting. So if anyone has any insight into which one I should choose, that would be a great help!
SUNY ALBANY.
But then again, it depends on where you live
Will your scholarship increase to meet the increased cost of tuition? Is there a minimum GPA you have to keep up or risk losing the scholarship? Could you stay at the school without the scholarship?
One thing I did like about Post (and my S17 was accepted but opted for a diffferent SUNY) was how NICE everybody we met was and how much the students seemed to love the school.
It’s also a nice campus but it’s really in suburbia. Believe me, I know. I live about 15 minutes away and it’s in the middle of nowhere. However, I grew up in NYC, so my definition of the middle of nowhere is based on that POV.
Personally, I think that you can’t go wrong with a SUNY.
SUNY Albany.
I got my financial aid from SUNY Albany and believe it or not, LIU Post will be cheaper because I did not receive any gift aid from Albany. I really would like to graduate from college 100% debt free. I live on Long Island but I am not totally against staying close to home or going away. I know that they are both great schools but I am still indecisive. Any more insight into any school would be great!
What are you planning to study? Will you need grad school? Is the merit money from Post contingent on keeping a certain GPA? Is it based on dorming? Will it increase each year to match tuition increases? My son was told that if he chose to live at home, his Post award would be reduced. He opted for a SUNY. Do you have AP credits - SUNY’s accept 3’s, Post doesn’t. Are you eligible for Excelsior? All things to think about.
I said in the beginning that I would be study Accounting. I do have AP credits that will count to both schools. I also have like 28 college credits that will Alain transfer to both schools. I was accepted into the five year accounting programs that prepare for the CPA exam. For LIU Post I would have to maintain a 3.5 GPA, but I asked around and people said it would not be that difficult to maintain considering my grades now. How much is tuition going to increase every year for the next four years? Would it be extremely significant because my scholarship currently awards me that LIU Post will cost about $5,000 per year.
SUNY Albany accounting program is well regarded. I know nothing about LIU Post. My vote, SUNY Albany! A worst-case scenario is if you lose the LIU-Post scholarship (any many do at other institutions, with a lower 3.0 GPA threshold), could you afford to attend? What is the COA at SUNY Albany and is it affordable? Do you qualify for the NYS Excelsior Scholarship? What are your high school stats?
I would look closely at the on-campus accounting recruiting at both schools before making a final decision.
Thanks so much for your input. The COA for SUNY Albany is about $25,000 they recently raised the tuition to cover the expenses lost through Excsior Scholarships. Unfortunately I will not qualify for the scholarship, even in future thresholds. Without my scholarship I would not be able to attend LIU Post. It’s a lot to think about. My high school stats are 94 weighted gpa and 27 on ACT. I took several AP classes and college classes through high school.
3.5 GPA is really high. Many honors programs only require 3.2 or 3.4. And those are programs for students who had 3.8-4.0 unweighted in HS.
It’d probably mean being top 10% in most classes.
Ask how many students get the scholarship and how many fail to meet the 3.5, requirement.
Being in the 5-year CPA program is excellent though. Ask about their respective pass rates.
I wrote a typo above. Should I said that I would need to maintain a 3.2 GPA
Oh, that’s totally different. 3.2 is doable indeed.
@shamrockirish Were you a direct admit to UAlbany undergraduate business for accounting? If so, i’d give the edge to SUNY Albany, as direct admits have perks such as internship and scholarship opportunities, smaller class size in a few courses, invitations to events for business students. IMO the quality of the student body and perception of SUNY Albany business is better than LIU Post. I’ve toured SUNY Albany and was impressed with the relatively new undergrad business school and the nice campus facilities. Direct Admits for UAlbany undergrad accounting require 90 gpa and min. ACT of 27 or better or 1270 or better on Math & CR on SAT. In contrast, direct admits to LIU Post only require 82-85 gpa and 20 or better on ACT or 1000 or better on Math & CR on SAT. There is a reason why LIU Post gave you a lot of scholarship money. They want to attract higher stat students like yourself. SUNY Albany does not need to. Do you want to be a big fish in a little pond or amongst more equal caiber of students who you will feel challenged and more stimulated in class discussion and academic rigor? USNWReport 2018 ed. ranks UAlbany undergrad business at #109 in country whereas LIU Post is not included in the rankings of top undergrad. business schools. Since you are on long island i’d recommend you sit in on a undergrad business class at Post to see how it is. Finally, how did you feel when visiting both campuses? Which felt more of a fit? Have you looked at the specific course offerings in the accounting programs at both schools. For example, Albany has Fin’l Accounting, Management, Auditing, Taxation, Accounting Info System. How do the two school’s course offerings compare? Have you asked the Career Centers of the business schools what companies recruit and what percentage of graduating business students have jobs? Best of luck with your decision!
I agree, try to go spend a day on campus. Attend a freshman English and a first year business class, (if you’re direct admit, at least one of these should be honors), sit in the cafeteria and see if students seem social in addition to the food quality, read the campus paper, visit the library and the gym (keep in mind that the library and its opening hours will be very important to your success).
