i reside in the Great state of New Hampshire and plan to apply to UChicago. i was just wondering how well represnted New Hampshire was at the university and how much of a benefit this will be to me in the admissions process.

Geographic Diversity, class of 2010:

Distribution by Region
Midwest 33%
Mid-Atlantic 20%
New England 9%
South 9%
Southwest 5%
West 12%
International 10%

So I’d say that coming from New England (New Hampshire, in particular) will make you somewhat unusual. The only person in my house from New England is also from New Hampshire-- Hanover-area. (That count includes the great states of Connecticut and Massachusetts).

If you come from nowheresville, e-mail Austin Bean (abean at uchicago dot edu) about your eligibility for the Small School Talent Search. (He’s in charge of it). I believe if you come from a high school that has been selected, your app fee is waived.

The person who covers New Hampshire is Jeffrey Hreben-- jhreben at uchicago dot edu.

(By the way, all of this is available here: http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/level2.asp?id=190)

Basically, I have no idea how much being from New Hampshire will or will not help you, but it probably will make you stand out more as an applicant. It will probably not be the decisive factor of your admissions, but at the same time, you might be considered more unusual because of it.

thank you very much for your advice. it was very helpful

Woohoo! 9% from the South! Woohoo!

I think I’m hopped up on caffeine.

Oh, yeah? 5% from the South West!! YAY!!!

bentley, I consider myself first a human being and second a citizen of New Hampshire. When I grow up, I will build my house from granite, plant purple lilac beside my front steps, and surround myself with white birches and purple finches until I die.

I went to Boston University my first year and was accepted for transfer in April. That being said, the Princeton Review reports that Chicago claims not to make decisions based on geographical location. I don’t think my upbringing in the Granite State helped my admissions decision anymore than it would have if I lived in Utah. But, I don’t know much. Maybe they know that New Hampshire naturally grows a sweet crop. What will you be saying about yourself in the application?

And what area are you from? I’m from Dover :P
