Living Abroad question

If your child has an accident of some sort while living abroad ,who would notify you ? Not a student ,but someone working and not in a program . Say ,something happened where they were unconscious ,or God forbid ,in an accident .

It is always a good idea to register with the American Embassy in the country where you are working or studying. In many cases they would be involved if there is an accident or if the person is missing, etc.

Hope everything is OK.

If you were in NY and your kid were in CA, how would someone notify you?

Their place of employment and their landlord should have an emergency contact on file. They’d probably notify you the same way any employer/landlord would, abroad or domestic.

Faux…your daughter has been abroad for a couple of summers. How did YOU handle emergency contacts?

Myself, my children and my husband have a “Emergency contact” listing in their cell phones. I would hope any emergency personnel would call that number.

Thumper1- my D is staying with a family . I was curious in a more general since .Swedish boyfriend starts second year .

So are you saying he is going to study abroad in us?

EK- No this is the beginning of the second year of their relationship .D just returned to farm in Sweden for her third year .

FM…so how did YOU handle emergency contacts while your D was abroad? You should already have some ideas that you should be able to share. You already have HAD a child abroad.

For my D in Sweden ,she was staying with a family . My son in China was another matter . I figured the Embassy would call in an emergency ,which was accurate .

Did son have an emergency while in China?

Would recommend having a list of emergency contacts in luggage/purse/wallet as well as cell phone. When overseas the US phone doesn’t always work.

For myself, i would rather not wait until the government notified me that my child needed emergency help.
I make sure i get other numbers.
For example my D had an emergency when she was in the jungle of costa rica. She used her profs satellite phone to let me know she had an ear infection. Then her prof contacted me to tell me if it got worse they could fly her out. ( no road access).

When she was in India, she went out side the region for her sim card, but i had the number of some of the other people she was meeting. (even though english wasnt strong)
Which is why skype contact might be preferable, hard to pantomime over audio.
