I’ve noticed listings on Craigslist for lofts. I was wondering if any of you, either as a student yourself, or has a student in college now, has ever lived in one of these places.

I’m assuming it is associated with living in a private home, either inside the home building itself, or perhaps over a garage.

Any experience with that, and was it an acceptable form of housing for students or young couples on a short term basis?

^^^may be referring to loft systems you use in dorm to “loft” regular twin size into bunk height. Students then put chair, futon, desk, or whatever under to create more dorm room space. Some schools beds are adjustable height but at some schools you have to buy lofts to do it yourself.

I’m helping my nephew and his wife find new digs, and since they need to live near their job at the local university, they’re finding lots of advertisements for lofts.

Don’t know if these are the upstairs or attics of private homes, or upstairs apartments over garages in private homes.

Different from dorm lofts, where you lift your bed up, or the warehouse renovated lofts that emerald suggested.

Was wondering if any of you had kids in grad school, or when in grad school yourself, lived in such a place and what the pros and cons were of such arrangements.

DH and I lived in a loft right out of graduate school. It was indeed a converted furniture factory (I believe). Huge space, very high ceilings. We didn’t have much furniture then and DH could ride his bike around inside. It was the top floor of about an eight-story building in downtown Milwaukee.
