Around how much does it cost to live in Tallahassee as a student? I know it’s a vague question, but about how much do FSU students usually spent in a month?

So please tell me how much do you and/or someone you know usually spend in a month (excluding tuition) while attending FSU?

Also, I would like to know:
[ul]
[] How is the shopping? Anywhere good or should I prepare to eBay?
[] How cold does it get? I’m from Miami…
[] How’s the job market? Should I run to another city after graduating?
[] What is the best value for cell phone service? (GSM-only please.)
[li] What do you think is the best part of Tallahassee?[/li][/ul]

Oh, and another broad question: how are the people in Tallahassee?

[ul][] My mentality is that I don’t talk to people I don’t know unless one of us needs something.
[] I don’t like people to bother me in stores unless I ask for their help.
[] Only weirdos run up and start talking to me randomly. If we’re friends we must’ve have been involved in something together to meet.
[] “Yes” or “No” are perfectly acceptable answers to yes or no questions
[li] Mind your own business[/ul]
[/li]

I ask because, sometimes these things are regarded as rude, but it’s really just how I’ve been raised. Basically, keep to yourself and the people you trust.

While I don’t know if it’s a Miami thing, but most of my friends pretty much hold the same ideas on that. But when I leave town, there are mutterings of my “rudeness.” And people say Miami is a city with a lot of rude people (which is true unless you’re rich and someone’s trying to talk you up for something).

I live in Miami too, and I can relate to the “mind your own business” attitude most people that live here have. Since I have only been to the fsu campus for a week, I would say its a little more socialable than inner city miami, considering it is a college town with many students looking to have fun.

As a current Miami resident, I can tell you that Tallahassee is the total opposite from what you’re probably used to. People in Tallahassee are very friendly and helpful. Random strangers will say “hi” when walking around campus and around the city. Most people in Tally will go out of their way to be nice and accommodating. There’s is genuine feeling of friendliness around the city.

Many students from Miami have a hard time adjusting to this lifestyle. They can’t comprehend how people could be so genuinely nice, without wanting something from you. Having the “Miami attitude” could turn some people off or get you the cold shoulder treatment. In my opinion, the Miami rudeness it’s not something that this city’s residents should be proud of. Actually, it’s the main reason why I would like to leave Miami in the near future.

I guess it all depends on your personality. Some people will feel at home in Tally, while others could feel excluded and out of their element. Like they say, to each his own. I actually had the reverse effect when moving to Miami from Tally. I found, and still find, most people to be extremely rude and unfriendly. It’s just something one has to get to, but to this day I really miss Tallahassee and its people.

im from coral gables, and i’ve been in tallahassee now for about 5 months, and trust me get ready for a culture shock.

Basically everywhere people are willing to help you and they generally like to talk to random strangers and in stores they generally and genuinely want to help you, unlike in miami people dont beep there horn after the light has been green for two seconds, food service is quite nice and people in general are more polite.

In terms of your question, it really depends on where you live, in a dorm i think its cheaper overall because all expenses are combined and you dont have to use your car at all. But apartments run from the mid $300 to the upper $600 a month, i know a place right near campus charging $350 for rent a month which is really cheap. Gas here is a bit cheaper than in miami, I put gas today since i’m driving down to miami for christmas break and paid 3.05 a gallon.

In terms of food, groceries and the like its generally all cheaper since you don’t have to deal with the expensive miami tourist prices. Shopping is all right, what i like about it is that in miami not many malls have my three favorite stores under one roof…hollister, abercrombie and american eagle yet here all 3 are located in the biggest mall governors square so most national stores are here, target, best buy, gap etc.

in terms of cellphones dont get tmobile, reception is horrible here, best reception is probably cingular.

Sprint has good reception in/around Tallahassee. Verizon is weak, but getting better and now sponsors FSU, where Alltel did before. Alltel is also good. No idea about ATT (Cingular). The home telephone system was Sprint - now called Embarq.

Car insurance is much cheaper in Tallahassee than south Florida, as is homeowners insurance.

I lived in Tallahassee for six years. When you live in a place like south Florida you adopt more aggressive driving characteristics over time simply to get around.

In Tallahassee those tendencies can come across as quite rude to those not used to them. Might want to check your driving a bit.
