Living off campus- What should I avoid?

I’m trying to find rooms in houses right now because they tend to be alot cheaper than living in apartments…

However, I have alot of night classes so I didn’t want to ride my bike down and get robbed just to save some rent money. I rather feel safe!

I was thinking about just staying off the west side of campus for the most part and not going past the high way if I live on the north side of campus…

ARe their any streets I should avoid or any of that sort?

I believe that students are STRONGLY encouraged NOT to live on the west side of campus, but stay to the area north of campus.

here is a USC housing map
[USC Maps](<a href=“USC Maps”>USC Maps)
showing where USC provided student housing ,both on and off campus, is located. As you can see, there is NO USC housing west of Vermont, for a very good reason.

here is a map of the USC shuttle routes.

http://transportation.usc.edu/transit/routes.aspx</a>
I would plan on limiting your search to these areas which are services by the shuttle service. These are also the areas where most off campus students live. Good luck.

So I’ve been living west of campus for this past year and have had no problems whatsoever. I think people automatically stereotype this area near campus and miss out on some opportunities for affordable (at least for places near USC) options.
And if you notice from all those dps crime reports, most of the occurrences are not on the west side.
Also, even though they are no tram routes, there is campus cruiser which is great if it’s really late at night.

Basically, don’t rule out the west side and best of luck with housing…this is one aspect of college I will not miss.

^true… but last time I went to sorta visit the house I wanted to rent, I saw a guy getting arrested at like 12 in the afternoon on a sunday, lol on jefferson

I do want to go north preferably ellendale but I guess I’ll keep my options open.

SUunnydaysee do you live beyond normandie? I looked at this great place on 35th pl but it seemed too far away…

Oh yeah, I’m not a fan of Jefferson, way too much traffic.
I live on 37th Place, near Catalina. Plenty of students on 37thPl, 37thSt, and 36th…try looking around this area.
I agree, past Normandie seems too far.

I’m leaning towards the place on jefferson although there are alot of traffic and stuff because its a bigger street… more foot traffic. I think they tend to be a little safer?

I wonder if anybody will do 9 month leases :/

hey, ive applied for transfer for fall09, and was wondering… how hard is it to get on campus housing ? as i will not know anyone, i think this would be the best option for me, at least to begin with… are they just guaranteed for freshmen ? do i have any chance of getting a dorm room ? also, is there any way to connect with other usc students looking for off campus housing so that it could be possible to get something together ? id rather live with some students than just random people/alone :)

^well you might get off campus school apartments, but there is pretty much no way you are going to get a dorm room on campus. Most are only for freshman. if you get a school apartment like century, troy hall etc you’ll still live with students so no worries :)

housing in general are only really guaranteed for sophomores and freshman. I thought the housing deadline passed… well you’ll definitely get a housing if you were on the waiting list but I don’t really know about transfer deadlines.

It is hard to get on-campus housing as a transfer. My D was a spring admit sophomore transfer & only got housing through the disability office (she has medical condition requiring her to live near her activities). Some have gotten housing via Craigslist–you can also check with Conquest Housing, which owns a lot of rentals in the area, including where my S lives (directly across the street from campus).

I thought that USC bought all the Conquest buildings recently - isn’t that right?

No. only half.

Westar Associates (not USC) purchased seven properties from Conquest- USC will take over management duties on those.

Conquest still has three properties near USC-

My S lived at “The Pad” this year, managed by Conquest. It was convenient but noisy (right across the soccer field & on frat row). The rent was roughly comparable to USC housing & it had all students. You may wish to consider it as an option.

ok yea that sounds pretty good  i dont mind it being noizy at all, at the moment i live right in the heart of waikiki(honolulu) and just outside our building is like at least 4 clubs and just everyone walking around drunk/fighting/screaming at night :P

Here’s info about the housing units managed by USC but owned by Westar. Neither of my kids have personal experience with these units.

For my kids, living very near campus is top priority. You have more options in price & different housing options when you’re more flexible about that.

thanks
yea i want to live as close to campus as possible too :D

Wow, if you can live in the heart of Waikiki, you can live nearly anywhere. I don’t think I’d last long in that environment myself. I guess good noise-cancelling earphones and earplugs become pretty important. It is convenient when you’re there since there’s a lot to see & do, but there is noise & all the buzz of a big city there.

haha yea :stuck_out_tongue: i really dont mind it… i mean at the moment its 2 am… and outside theres someone playing on like a drum, trying to get money from drunk people :stuck_out_tongue: hes there every night, gonna play for like another 2 hours…

You could call in an anonymous complaint to the police so maybe s/he’d set up somewhere else & you could sleep??? Just a thought–I’d probably do that because if I don’t get sleep, I start getting sick.

haha well i dont mind it that much :stuck_out_tongue: and i can sleep anywhere ^^ just like to stay up pretty late :P
