I’m interested in hearing any information anyone might have about living on the lawn.

All of my friends who did it loved it. I knew it was not for me!

Hazelorb…What kind of activities/time commitments did your lawn friends have? I’ve heard of Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn, and I believe lawn kids are sometimes asked to faculty hosted dinners…what other things did your friends do? I understand the lawnie’s primary role is to be an ambassador for the school, but I’m curious about what else is required/expected.

How does one get chosen to live on The Lawn?

PsychoDad10, rising fourth years may apply. Typically there are between 260-300 applicants per year. Lawn residents are chosen based upon scholarship and leadership/involvement at UVA. Here are further details:

It is considered a high honor to be offered the opportunity to live on the lawn. It is quite uncommon to turn down the opportunity. Those who have a real problem with going outside to the bathrooms/showers in the winter don’t apply.

I don’t think much is “required” in terms of time commitment – it’s more that the University wants to put its “best foot forward” in these highly visible spaces, so they don’t want troublemakers/loud parties/slobs inhabiting the rooms. The faculty and staff pavilions (the two story buildings between the lawn rooms) are used for classes, receptions, and other high-level entertaining quite frequently.

All and all, living there would not impact your daughter’s otherwise quite busy schedule, and it is actually a “resume enhancer.”

In my history of UVA course (under LASE), we learned that originally the university had problems filling the lawn rooms after more traditional dorms (like brown college and the old dorms) were built. It’s funny that it’s so competitive now.

I don’t know of anyone who had obligations. I know it is generally assumed you will be there and have your room open on things like lighting of the lawn, trick or treating on the lawn, etc. The lawnies are a social group and they’re always tailgating together and having social events and stuff. The RA of the lawn obviously has more obligations. There are even rooms reserved for certain sororities/etc. Everyone on the lawn is already overcomitted. I think everyone there is excited to be a part of the community and why would you apply unless you wanted people as well as tourists and streakers around you at all times anyways (plus the bathroom thing)?

Thanks AVA55 and Hazelorb! I appreciate you taking the time to respond! :)

Thanks jc40
