after filling out my fafsa, san diego state awarded me $17,930 in unsubsidized loans per year. I was wondering if the loans are guaranteed or does the government do a credit check on my parents beforehand? The reason I’m asking is because my parents have some credit card debt and they also owe money to the IRS and I wanted to know if that would keep me from getting these loans

There is no credit check on the Stafford Loans. However, if any portion of the loans which were offered were Parent PLUS or Alternative Loans, there is a credit check required.

so what options do you have if it is a Parent Plus loan? because I got about $14,000 in Parent Plus Loans and then $3,000 in Student loans. I have a feeling that if there is a credit check for these I won’t get the loan because my parents owe like $60,000 and we don’t own a house. am i just not going to be able to pay for college?

Parent PLUS loans do require a credit check. If the lender deems your parent is not credit worthy, the school should then revise your award to include additional Stafford Loans in your name. As an FAA, if you/your parents do not want PLUS loans, I would advise the least credit-worthy parent to complete the Pre-Approval for the PLUS loan. This increases the odds that they will be denied. If they do not mind taking out the PLUS loans, then have the most credit-worthy parent complete the application.
