local alumni club

Can someone please explain to me the importance of local alumni clubs?

Are they just clubs that members get together and have some events every once in a while? Or can they have an effect on admission decisions? I mean can they support the local applicants? Can they prioritize the students?

My friend had his interview with an alumni, then alumni told him that the local alumni club will have a meeting next week to discuss his situation and to see “what they can do for him.”

My question is that, are they that influential?

This whole thing made me curious so I researched Columbia. I found an attorney, and on her web site said that “She is also on the Undergraduate Admissions Committee for the Columbia University Alumni Club of _______.”

Please explain this to me, if you know anything about the local alumni clubs.

Local alumni clubs want to help the applicants from their area. But I don’t think they are very influential. They know so little about you compared to your guidance counselor and teachers who write you letters. I do believe that most alumni clubs want to act as your supporter and advocate, as well as their role of information conveyor.
