Local area question - Univ. of Cincinnati

A friend’s son from overseas has been admitted to the industrial design program and is very excited to attend, but they have not visited the campus and want to know more about the area. He asked if I knew any parents there (I don’t), so I turn to you all - how’s the neighborhood and surrounding areas, safe? I’m sure it’s fine, but people from some countries overseas have different perspectives and when your son is 6,000 miles and 8 timezones away they worry. Thanks in advance.

The local crime isn’t a reason I would strike the school from the list, but I would caution the student not to take his safety for granted. There are safety resources like Night Ride (free nighttime shuttle service) for a reason.

Having said that, UCincy was a school my kids considered and the crime activity seemed to be similar to other urban campuses and the one they ultimately chose. Students we know that attended UCincy enjoyed their time there.

The industrial design program is well regarded and their co-op program is great.

I hope @bearcatfan or others can provide more perspectives.

I think UC has had some serious growing pains in the last couple years. I am no longer the admin of the parents group on Facebook, but when I left there was a group of parents working with UCPD and CPD to improve safety.

Some incidents are on the students - leaving things unlocked, not being aware. The area right around campus is a bit sketchy, in my opinion. My husband is from Cincinnati and went to UC for undergrad and law school, and he says nothing has really changed. He is 6-6, and doesn’t like walking around the area near campus in the evening. My daughter lived in the dorms for two years, at University Edge (just off campus) and another apartment complex a bit further out. She was fine, and nothing ever happened to either her or her car.

I think UC does not have unusual issues for being an urban campus. The campus is fine, and the surrounding area is … ok. You may want to check out the Facebook group Bearcats for a Safer UC (something like that) or the University of Cincinnati Parents group. Good luck with the decision!
