Local Recognition and National Merit

Just wondering if any of you National Merit Commended Scholars (the 50,000 out of the 1.4 million) got local recognition. My daughter was the only one at her school/class (of 240) and nothing has been said. I did mention it to the guidance counselor and got that the only recognition will be if she makes finalist. Just curious how your schools react. Thanks!

Our school put it on the announcements for a week to honor commended students. They also do that with all non-school-attached scholarships (academic all-stars, etc.)

At my daughter’s school, the semifinalists were honored at the school board meeting and there was also a reception for them at the school. Not much recognition for finalists, though.

I was announced at an awards assembly and at graduation.

I go to a prep school (12% made commended) and even though college acceptances, sports reports, some birthdays, etc are on the announcements, our commended standing was never announced. It was posted on the weekly written announcements for two weeks and we will be regonized at graduation.

I think it is great that all of you got some sort of mention! I think it is so important to recognize the achievements of the students. Beyond sports. It seems as not a winning game goes by without an announcement in the paper of the star player. I think that is great also…but so should the hardworking scholars be recognized. Since my daughter is the only one at our school to be commended, to pursue it would make me look like a pushy mom. I’m not… Congrautlations to all of you!!!

just recognized at the awards ceremony. nothing major.
