Forbes named Hamilton, NY as one of “America’s Friendliest Towns.” Students who would find such a village — along with, in Hamilton’s case, the authentically rural countryside in its vicinity — to be appealing, are likely to appreciate Colgate’s setting.

That would be individual dependent - and I wouldn’t base what other people say as what’s right for you.
It’s small town rural and for many that’s great. And for others, not so much.
Syracuse (a city with everything) is within reach.
You have to decide if this environment (rural CNY) is right for you.

@tsbna44 is spot on here. Is rural CNY right for you. However, it is “rural light” with shopping and a mall in New Hartford only about 30 minutes away.
Note that while Hamilton College resides about 12 minutes from the suburban amenities of New Hartford (to which it connects by a college-run shuttle), the trip from Colgate takes about 36 minutes.
