Lofty ideals in an essay...will it help or hurt?

My son has written an essay about his philosophical views of the world and how he wants to make a difference. He is a deep thinker and does care about world events. I am concerned that the Admiss. Couns. may view his essay as soap boxing or of being disingenuous. Any thoughts on this type of essay?

The general view is that this type of essay is one of the most difficult choices. The reasons cited range from a perceived lack of originality of the subject to openly questioning how an eighteen year old could amaze the adcoms with well-formed opinions.

I think that essays which deal with personal matters are better choices. A platform of 500 words is quite small to discuss the state of the world. Since the college application essay offers the writer the chance to present his personal facets, I would recommend to seize that opportunity.

On the other hand, if the application contains other elements of deep thinking or creativity, the complementary of such an essay could make sense. It is doable but difficult.
