Members of the British royal family are not known(and not needed) for their intellect. They are pretty good in ceremonial roles.

emilybee, thanks for the info on the rowing coaches.

mizzbee, I enjoyed that volleyball game, too. That one Korean player was fun to watch. She made even the tall players look short.

They really need to fix their streams. (NBC I mean).

Regarding the idea that the British dislike their queen and the royal family:

This mens gymnastics is almost too stressful for me to watch.

I really empathize with Orozco’s mother, sitting in the stands watching but trying not to watch. The stress on the moms and dads must be unbearable.

All my British friends despise the royal family, ER included. They were appalled that I threw a Kate and Wills wedding party.

Best opening ceremony for me - Barcelona 92 when the archer lit the Olympic flame with the flaming arrow!

Beach volleyball–I Don’t know why it bugged me so much that the Australian team had to “hug” for every point, win or lose! Is this the thing they all do? As you can tell I am not up on beach volleyball.

lima, my D noticed the same thing. The indoor volleyball teams also had a group hug after every play. That was the US and Korean women.

Please tell me you knew that was satire.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to see NBC’s schedule for when they’re showing each event?

I had planned not to be spoiled about the swimming results, but my D called me at work absolutely chortling, and I broke down and asked for the results. Given the negative picture of Phelps painted by Baltimoreans we know, we were quite happy to see him taken down a peg.

Even if he has a disastrous 2012 Olympics, he will retire as the greatest Olympian ever. I am not certain why anyone would enjoy seeing an athlete lose while giving all he could in an event that no longer favors his skills. What else could he do? Stay home and not compete? Or do we really expect him to cruise to victory in all his races.

We should be ecstatic that Lochtie finally got his just desserts and brought yet another gold medal to the United States. I do not see why anyone should be happy to see Phelps missing out an a medal. Is it because it did not happen before?

Crab mentality? That said, rooting for more gold for Lochte in 200IM, 200 FR, 200BK and the relay!

Thought I’d add another voice into the mix, to say I loved the opening ceremonies, wasn’t bored at all. Thought it was brilliant (well, except for the big creepy baby). Particularly loved McCartney’s ending. But I thought the NBC coverage was appalling. Incredibly stupid trivia, much unrelated to sports or the Olympics. And too many commercials.

Most of the comments I read on newspaper websites and news channels were broadly positive. There were some negative comments and some of those were from Brits but it’s still only a minority. It’s in our nature to nitpick and beat ourselves down, we don’t often gush with pride even when we have something to be proud about.

Nobody has said who ever disagrees is dense or unable to understand the subtleties of British humour; you’ve come up with that yourself. But it was a very British event and you probably had to be British to understand everything that happened (like the passing reference to EastEnders for example).

Perhaps you could spend a few minutes and google the roster of the USA Men national team that competes in London, and let us know how many 16 to 20 years old are listed.[/QUOTE

I don’t know if you’re being willfully obtuse but it’s starting to bug me. I have made no reference to the US team as a whole, so what are you hoping to prove by quoting the respective ages of the American swimming team? I said that swimmers in general are getting younger each year, is that such a difficult concept to understand?

^ And personally therein lies the problem for many people. This was a production geared towards the British audience. I feel that’s shortsighted when you have a global audience. We are huge fans of the Olympics and love watching the opening ceremonies. There were parts we appreciated, but overall we’d have turned it off if it weren’t the Olympics. Dionysus, you do seem quite defensive when someone states their opinion that they didn’t care for it. Aren’t we all entitled to our own opinions, or did I miss the memo?

The number of people lining the roads for the cycling events is incredible. It must be exciting for the riders.
