London Olympics 2012 - SPOILER ALERT

Michael Phelps - silver! 200 butterfly. Ties history - 18th medal.

I am a bit sad for Phelps. So very close!

looking at the splits, he seems to have run out of gas in that last 50. Maybe he took it out too hard in the 1st 100. Winner had a negative split on the last 50 vs the 3rd. such a tough race - surprisingly it’s S1’s favorite.

Disappointed our nearby hometown boy, Cullen Jones, missed the final of the 100, however the 50 is his race.

Phelps -_-

What are you talking about? Both were widely reported in lots of papers, including USA Today.

Also, a number of Lance Armstrong’s teammates took themselves out of the running for this year’s Olympics. They didn’t say why, but the implication is pretty obvious. That was in the headlines.

Can you take the drug stuff somewhere else? Pretty please with a cherry on top.

I don’t know that I’m sad for Phelps. He stands a very good chance of being the most decorated Olympian in history. That’s an amazing accomplishment! The medals aren’t the color he’d like but they probably reflect what he trained for. There is some amazing competition out there that are peaking physically right now, just as he did earlier in his career.

Done. I hope it doesn’t get so political that it has to be closed, though.

Good…

Was this supposed to be Phelps’ best event, the 200 Butterfly?

I think so, dstark. But with a swimmer like that is hard to say he had a “best” event.

Kathleen Hersey did a great job in the semifinal for the 200m fly. Qualified with the best time.

Phelps has dominated the 200 fly for many, many years. He hasn’t lost an Olympic or world race since 2003. It is a grueling race, possibly more so than the 400 IM. His last shot for personal gold is the 200 IM, which he won in trials. (4x200 free relay has been the US ‘money’ race for many years).

I’m just looking at results on NYTimes site, so I haven’t see the race, however NYT reported “Phelps appeared to have the race won, but glided in as Le Clos took another stroke”. Bit of turning the tables, as Phelps took the extra stroke in the 100 fly in Beijing to win. (FYI - taking that extra stroke in fly is tough, as you must recover with your arms over the water and your hands, not your head, must touch first)

Hooray for Allison Schmitt (women’s 200 m freestyle)! Local girl makes good!

I think Phelps is in it for the medal count this year, rather than for the win. Of course, he would like to win, but he didn’t train to win.

Japan dominates swimming - in the bronze medal position.

Cartera, I think you are correct. He is competing with a gymnast, I believe. Good for him! A silver is a silver.

Watching the US Men’s Water Polo team take on Romania. Great game so far. Love seeing Terry Schroeder coaching. Olympic Fun fact: He was one of the models for the naked statues outside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Njmom, based from what I saw it did look like a long finish for Phelps. He should have done a “Le Clos London finish,” or rather, a “Phelps Beijing finish” where you make a quick last stroke instead of gliding too long but as you explained, a tough call to make in swimming when everything is down to one tenth of a second.

He should concentrate on being proud of himself for garnering 18 Olympics medals instead. No need to feel bad about this race.

I’m annoyed at some of the headlines- seems like a silver medal is a “disaster” or a “nightmare”. Geez.

Ye Shsomething wins gold again!

I agree, MOWC, it’s still a huge accomplishment for Phelps!

Now, the relays!
