London snowstorm- stranded D- humbug!

D was to arrive today from semester in London. Heathrow shutdown…ugh.
Earliest direct flight home next Thursday! Have been able to book a connecting flight on Tuesday. We watched online as hotel rates skyrocketed. Luckily they have been able to return to their school’s flat.

Phone bill should be entertaining—a number of other kids used her phone to call home, since they didn’t have their US phones with them…

Keeping fingers crossed for Tuesday!

Good luck; d is leaving for London in January; looks like they are having a hellish winter in Western Europe and it’s not even really winter there either (like in the US)…

X X X X X X X X X X … crossed fingers!!

Good luck everyone. My DD has a confirmed nonstop flight leaving Wednesday. I’m crossing my fingers for good weather-I wish the same for all your kids!

I’m sorry your D is unable to leave today.

My D is also in London for semester abroad. She is booked on a flight for Tuesday, but I’ve been looking at the forecast…for now, snow through Wednesday. Ugh.

Maybe the London DDs should get together and commiserate…or maybe they’ve already met each other…

Hope all the Ds make it home safely!

rodney is right. The winter has been brutal there so far. It even snowed this week in the Balearic Islands.

I suppose if one is stranded, London is not too bad a place, though!

Sorry for your D’s hassles and sorry for you that she is not home yet. I also have a daughter in Europe and her long journey home begins on Thursday (hopefully).

Actually, come to think of it, it begins on Wednesday…first leg of it, two trains.

So…had D on flight tomorrow with a connection…but, that has now been cancelled. But! did manage to get a Monday flight with two stops! Things are trending the right way, I guess…

Good luck to all kids journeying home…

D’s boyfriend in college was supposed to leave Boston today to fly home to Germany via London. Flight was cancelled - airlines aren’t even rescheduling him yet.

London is bad and it is one of the least hit parts of the UK. In some places they have got the the stage of appeals to people with 4-wheel drive vehicles to ask them to transport doctors to hospitals.

I don’t actually live in London (I put that as my location because I work there and no-one has heard of where I do live. Moved here to care for a relative. Long story) but in a small town called Winchester and it’s lovely here in the snow. However, I don’t have to go anywhere. All I have done today is walk to the pub, meet friends and have lunch in front of the fire

Winchester in snow.

I am sorry your kids are stuck. I think it is better once a flight is actually cancelled. It’s the waiting that is so awful. Once cancelled, c’est la vie. You can go and do something else.

“Heathrow Airport announced about 1920 GMT on Saturday that it would remain shut until Sunday…”
Hopefully this means things will be running on Monday through next week. Forecast though is for snow through Wednesday. Article also mentions the rest of northern Europe is paralyzed…even Florence…

cupcake, I was in Winchester in September…lovely town, beautiful cathedral (I was staying in Petersfield nearby)

I saw that the weather is not looking good through Wednesday. DD is supposed to leave Wednesday. She is bound for Dallas, and we are not expecting bad weather; it will just depend on how things are going in Europe-will the plane be able to get to the airport from whatever destination, will the weather in London cooperate, etc.

Yuck.

United has also now canceled Sunday morning flights at Heathrow…

D & her fellow students have all be re-booked…but some not even until Christmas Eve!!

Please weather gods, give them a break so we can get our babies home for the holidays!

^ gosmom, when does your D have a flight? Does Heathrow/United feel things will be ok early in the week? I’m kind of concerned this snow mess will go on.

I am from London and trapped in DC, but after 3 hours on hold with Virgin Atlantic I am finally booked onto a flight Monday night (in upperclass, no less)

VIRGIN ROCKS!!!

Sequoia, D has 9 a.m. flight Monday. Yes, very concerned that this mess will go on…but the temps are supposed to be in uppper 30’s, so crossing fingers that that stuff starts melting!

It took kids 3 hours taking the tube from Heathrow back to flat in Central London, which I’m hearing was a much better commute than above ground.

Here’s hoping everyone gets their loved ones where they need to be. Safely.

I have a British friend whose wife is a flight attendant. She is stuck at LHR … got the flight boarded, they left the gate and 7 hours later, the flight crew wasn’t legal to fly anymore, so they changed out the crew, the passengers sat some more and then the flight was canceled. He’s supposed to fly to London this week – Christmas with his parents – but is worried that he won’t get there.

My son was traveling home from Berlin with a transfer at Heathrow yesterday. His BMI flight was diverted to Leeds, then a 5 hour bus ride to Heathrow. Of course the airport was shut down by the time he got there. He is only 16. He had been on exchange in Berlin since August. Luckily his older brother’s friend who was on the Hamilton in London first semester is stranded as well and my son was able to get to his dorm in London. But I cannot get through to Virgin Atlantic at all. Boy, this is hard. I am afraid he will be there for days now. I miss him so much.

DDs flight from Eastern Europe on Friday had to do an an emergency landing in Romania. They got to Munich but she couldn’t get a flight out until today. I just checked and it departed so I assume she is at least finally on her way. One of her friends flew in Friday night to see her and another is driving down now. Luckily, she was given a hotel and food vouchers at both places, and was able to do a bit of sightseeing.
