I have a car and I’m wondering where I could obtain long-term parking for most of my stay at Dartmouth?

I was reading and I heard you could park at a frat? Does the school offer some kind of parking for students?

Thanks!

First of all as a freshman the school will not allow you to have a car on campus. Even in subsequent years, parking is very limited and extremely inconvenient.

All students bringing motor vehicles to Hanover must register these with the Parking Office located at 37 Dewey Field Road, Room 201. There is a $50 fine per term for any student failing to register for campus lots or for off-campus parking. Student resident parking (A-lot) registration is by the term and must be renewed each term. Students must show the vehicle registration, their valid drivers license and their College I.D. when registering. The fee for parking in College lots is $20.00 a term; there is no charge to register for off-campus parking (i.e. fraternities, sororities, and private homes). Off-campus registration must be renewed each year for the period July1 - June 30. Registration permits must be affixed to the front driver’s side and right rear bumpers of the vehicle or the passenger front and drivers side back windows. DO NOT place over expired decal. There is a $50 fine for any student failing to register for campus lots or for off-campus parking.

Sounds shady but

1) if you park off campus or at a frat (about 150/175 per term) DON’T register your car!! It just gives Dartmouth a chance to charge you for tickets. I never registered in three years and left without ever paying a ticket (had like 2).

You can park as a first year, just do it off campus or at a frat.

Steve, you can ask frats/sororities or park at the Hanover parking facility in town for $85 or $100 or $125 a month…options like frats or private houses tend to be cheaper. Hanover Parking Facility (603)643-0742.
Sybbie, lighten up.

I’d just wonder why you feel you need a car. Personally, the times I would actually use a car are so few that it’s not worth it to have one on campus. Most of my friends feel the same way.

For that matter, you don’t even need a bike. The farthest you’d ever have to walk is from the Roth Center/Aquinas House area to Thompson Arena/soccer fields. That walk takes less than fifteen minutes (timed it last year).

But I digress. When you add up parking fees and maintenance costs, I just don’t think it’s worth it.

Fifteen minutes is a loong time. Especially when you’re carrying a backpack and in a rush.

-a person whose dormitory-to-dining hall walk is nine minutes.

PS- Cars are convenient for off-campus travel, like to Boston or Montreal. But I guess it’s preference.

To wisconsinguy:
I bought a car for high school (jobs, going out, driving to school,etc.). I rather bring my car along to Dartmouth than to leave it at home.

Question:
Do frats offer housed parking, shielding the car from the elements?

Decidedly not.

As for Raspberry’s argument:

First, with the parking situation on campus, it’s very likely that the parking hassle will take you longer than 15 minutes.

And I’m very curious as to where you live (is it at D?). I live in just about the farthest dorm from anything, and can still get to a dining hall in five, with backpack.

Agreed. It’s probably better to not have a car until junior/senior years.

I’m not at D (yet!) but my boarding school does a nice job of upping that cardio in walking from class to class.

Everywhere on campus is easily walkable. If you want to go off campus for anything, you need a car. I use mine almost every other day.

I really liked having a car. It was nice for west leb trips, road trips, boston trips, etc! So much fun. Also you can buy cars at an auction in Manchester for literally less than a thousand dollars. Its called Capital Auto Auction.
