Long weekend idea for big anniversary

Our 30th anniversary is coming up and we want to do something different along with our best friends who will also be celebrating their 30th. It looks like due to work and finances we might just go for a long weekend, maybe a Thursday evening to Monday evening. We live in the south with access to a major airport, but we also don’t mind driving somewhere. For our 15th we went to Burmuda for a week which gave us the beach and sightseeing. Most likely we will go in June, although for a great trip we could go another time.

One of us can not do a ton of walking, but some is fine. Other than that we don’t have any requirement; well, lots of fun and maybe some relaxation! None of us have been on a cruise, so that is a thought; a beach vacation would be well deserved, but something we do with the kids each summer. I also thought of going to maybe San Francisco as we have never been, but the other couple has. If we go with a long weekend, the cruise or flying out west doesn’t give us a ton of time for the trip. We are looking for the trip to be something to remember, something other than the same old, same old. I would be happy sitting on the beach for a few days, but the guys will just end up napping the entire time, so need some place where we can go and do things for part of the day or evening.mOh, and maybe somewhere my husband’s Blackberry doesn’t work would be nice :-)

Looking for great ideas for a 4 night trip, but hoping I can get the working 2 to take more days off!!

Are you guys adventurous enough?

I love going to Montreal! Beautiful city. It is like being in Europe without the jetlag! Great restaurants.

Victoria BC is also a beautiful place to visit for a long weekend.

Montreal is on my short list…my sister and her husband were there recently and said it was like Europe in driving distance…what about Iceland ? Really fantastic place and easy access. I have never seen anyplace even close to it

We’ve taken wonderful trips to New Orleans, Montreal and Quebec, all good places to eat and see sights.

Kei

Bunsen, Looks like a good time, but this group is not athletic; well one is, but 2 of us are couch potatoes, and I refuse to name them as I don’t want to incriminate myself ;-)

Canada would be a great idea; my husband has been to Montreal and would enjoy going again. Is June a good time to visit Montreal?

Son went to Tulane, so we have seen much of New Orleans.

The weather in MOntreal in June is great! Spring like usually.

What about the Monterey Coast? Carmel,Monterey,Big Sur and “all that”. June is a beautiful time to visit.

<a href=“Big Sur Luxury Hotel | Ventana Big Sur | Hotel in Big Sur, CA”>Big Sur Luxury Hotel | Ventana Big Sur | Hotel in Big Sur, CA;

plenty to do for those who are active and others who are “not so much”.

How about NYC. Go to a broadway show, ballet or an opera. Visit the MOMA, planeterium, Museum of Natural History. See the Intrepid, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Dine in Little Italy and Greenwich Village. Visit the South Street Seaport. So much to see and do.

How about Charleston?

Lots to do and see with a little bit of walking.

Tybee Island could also be nice - rent a beach house and be within easy reach of Savannah.

I am a big fan of Provincetown if you want to come north.

What are your thoughts on Las Vegas? You can do a lovely, high-end trip to Las Vegas with suites in a very nice hotel, some fancy dinners and shows.

I also love Victoria, B.C. as Bunsen suggested. You do not need to be athletic for that trip at all. June weather is beautiful there and the Butchart Gardens will be in bloom.

fendrock: Oh…Provincetown in Cape Cod is great. You just have to be accepting to alternative lifestyles or it will stress you out! We usually stay in other parts of Cape cod and go into Provincetown for the day or for dinner. We are accepting of alternative lifestyles, it is just a bit busy for us for vacation.

milkandsugar: you are right, you can never go wrong with NYC!

Love all the ideas above:

to add, Napa and Sonoma; Sedona, Arizona; Santa Fe, New Mexico…

and, yes, I’m jealous…haven’t been away with my husband alone in 5 years…

rodney…you need to remedy that right away!

Napa and Sonoma - ahhh… Good times  You can spend some time in San Francisco then drive to Sonoma and enjoy some wine tasting. Opus One Winery is a must to see, but their wines… not in my budget at $300/bottle :)

This lodge is an excellent base camp for exploring the wineries: [The Lodge at Sonoma - Sonoma Resort Hotel, Napa Valley, Wine Country](http://www.thelodgeatsonoma.com/)

rodney, what holliesue says!

Been to NYC too many times so it wouldn’t be as special; plus one of the other couple’s daughter lives there, so they would feel a need to visit!

Charleston might be a good idea and within driving distance; we haven’t been much to the dismay of our children who both love Charleston.

Vegas, the chosen location of the other husband who would gamble all day, so the rest of use vetoed it!

Cape Cod was were were were originally going when my aunt offered the use of their home; problem was her husband didn’t realize she offered it for free and he and the other owners were not willing to do that.

rodney, I need to check into a couple of your suggestion as those are good possibilities.

If you decide on Napa, PM me; we did Napa/San Francisco for our 30th!

Rodney, I always thought you were the husband :o

Niagara Falls/Buffalo - perfect for 4 days. The Falls (American and Canadian sides); casinos, Albright Knox Museum, newly restored Frank Lloyd Wright house (Darwin/Martin). Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Foodie town. Not expensive.

Bring a passport, go into Canada: Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries. Ice Wine an international specialty. Shaw Festival in Ontario. Or drive alltheway to Toronto. (2 hours from Buffalo to Toronto. depending on border traffic).

Women’s History: drive around 90 minutes East to Seneca Falls, NY.

Underground Railroad history: developing as a tourist destination (see various websites).

Or go southward to Corning, NY for the Glass Museum.

BUF Airport is in Clarence, next to Amherst; no traffic or hassle to get there. Rent a car.

Summertime weather is lovely; big bang for the buck. If you don’t want to hotel in downtown Buffalo, pick a northtown suburb like Amherst. Then you drive 30 min south to Buffalo center or 20 minutes north to Niagara Falls USA.

It’s not a resort-type distination; you use your ingenuity here and it’s very pleasant, satisfying, interesting. Good driving pathways between points, thinking of your friend who doesn’t walk as much.

Key West? My H’s favorite getaway. You can be as active or inactive as you like. You can walk, or there are little tour trains that you can ride and get on and off as you wish. Lots of different kinds of things to see and do. Very laid back atmosphere. Great food, great sunsets!

Williamsburg? One place that we have never been, but would like to visit.
