I saw a thread where a person’s friend dropped his UW GPA of 4.0 to a 2.75 in Junior year and people on the thread suggested a gap year and dont apply to EA so he can improve in the first marking period of Senior year. Im kind of in the same position, but I have a reason due to the fact I moved and had some family problems. So writing this on my personal statement, will colleges give a look at my senior year grades?

I can’t say judge your reason or anything, considering I don’t know it, but my advice is to apply senior year anyways (and explain the situation) and hope for the best. If you don’t get the results you are looking for, maybe then you’ll consider a gap year (although only if you’re going to do something awesome with it :)). But yeah, if you want senior grades to be counted as much as possible, I don’t think you should apply EA.

I also forgot to mention my GPA was rising from freshmen to sophmore but dropped to like a 3.2 in junior (b/c of the moving and fp) so my case isnt as bad as the example.

Seriously guys I need more responses. Im desperate for help!

Star* answered the quesiton already.

Not necessarily directed at the op. I just need to rant.
I HATE excuses like this.
/rant.

Don’t put it in your personal statement. Put it in the extra info section.

Make certain that your counselor is very, very aware.

@Johnson181 - Is it because you dont believe it? Im really not making anything up if that’s what you are saying. And can you clarify extra info section?
@Ealgian - Thanks! I never thought about telling my counselor about it.
So assuming that the Counselor will address this issue on my recommendation letter, I shouldnt write how the family problem and move changed me on my personal statement?

I’m not buying it… moved right before 9th grade and had to deal with Katrina in 10th. Then moved again right before 11th. Lots of family drama went down too, believe me.

As for the extra info section- on the common app and several others, there’s a section for extra information towards the end (it’s a section you can upload anything you want). Several others even have sections for ‘extenuating circumstances’ that you think the college should know about.

You moved “before”, however I moved during the 1st marking period into a much more competitive school. Im serious. This school makes my old school’s honors a joke. My old school Alg2 did not teach me stuff like the Unitcircle in my Sophmore year. While everyone had it memorized, I struggled to keep up and learn everything I missed (This is during Junior (Precalc) year) This move was the result of the family issues. And this isnt an excuse. Im not making it up and I have no control over my parent’s issues and decisions.

Just be careful not to seem like you’re looking for sympathy or anything… there are other people in your situation. I’d recommend talking to your guidance councillor about writing it for you in her report, that way it won’t come off as complaining, but the admission officers will still understand your situation.

^^Katrina was not ‘before’ either. We were completely into classes as well, and I was thrown into a lot more difficult classes as well.
Gah I need to get off the computer when it’s this late.
