Look Away I'm Hideous!(plz help me)

Alright, so I’m new to these forums and I’m in awe of the extent to which some of you posters go above and beyond to help others. Anyway, I’m seeking out some of this great advice for myself, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m searching for schools that fit my personal description (as I warned you, my grades are absolutely hideous and my stats are very limiting indeed.) I really need the advice of some of you overly knowledgable posters, as I am completely clueless!

General: Rising Senior, Male, New York

Ethnicity: Hispanic

Career Interests: Accounting,Finance
High School: my high school is pretty average
School Stats: GPA Unweighted:2.6
GPA Weighted: 3.0 Unweighted Rank:165/290
Weighted Rank: 137/290

Testing:
1930 on SAT(750M, 680CR, 500 W)(I’m really happy with these scores, ill retake once more to try to get that writing up though)
AP’s (lookk far away)[ (, 1 on eng comp, 1 on us, im taking english lit, calc ab, and gov next year) I didn’t take these tests very seriously, i know i can improve with some effort

EC’s:

  • I’ve tutored math a little bit
-2 yearr all conference basketball player and 3 year all conference tennis player( not good enough to be recruited athlete) I’ve also play soccer
    Yaa thats it

Basically, guys, I haven’t treated my studies with the required level of seriousness and devotion that is necessary, and my grades obviously reflect this. I’ve come to realize that my immature and misguided ways will serve to have repercussions, and I really do want to change my whole attitude towards academics. Thanks in advance for any feedback

don’t worry, if you can get your senior year grades up as high as you can (just persevere and study hard for one semester), you definitely have a shot at getting into a good college. After junior year last year, I had a 2.9 unweighted GPA and I thought I wasn’t going anywhere for college. This year I studied hard, took some easier classes and got a 3.7 unweighted GPA first semester. The end result? I got accepted to Pittsburgh, Clemson, Purdue, Northeastern and Virginia Tech, schools in the top 50-70 in the country.

I’m at school right now and don’t have time to think of some colleges that might fit you but when I get home, I’ll try to find some schools that might be right for you.

You are lucky to be in New York because the SUNY system has something for everyone. A B average with good M/V SATs may not be as bad as you think. You might look into getting some assistance with writing–could that be impacting your AP scores as well?

Dude, don’t be so hard on yourself, those are some great SAT scores and the Writing portion might be the easiest section to improve. You are also taking a challenging courseload of AP classes, regradless of score. I agree with pierre, focus, focus, focus on your first semester and show a strong upward trend in your grades and you should have your choice of some outstanding colleges.

Look into Temple.

Here are the schools among the best business schools that you might have a shot at:

Arizona State University
Purdue University - West Lafayette
Texas A&M University - College Station
University Of Iowa
University Of Texas - Dallas

What is your expected level of financial need? SUNYs (or CUNYs) may be your best bet.

ASU is top 50 according to US News for business and basically anybody can walk into that school

If you can get your grades up, shoot for Purdue or Indiana

awww you’re not so hideous :stuck_out_tongue:

I definitely agree that you should look into the SUNYs. If you do well there you can potentially transfer after your second year.

Hey guyss, I appreciate all the help. You’ve given me some hope. Pierre, its awesome that you got into those schools, im guessing u had some other attributes that were pretty outstanding though. I appreciate all your suggestions, i’m going to research them. It’s interesting that ASU is so highly ranked and not all that competitive…almost like too good to be truee lol. I’ve heard about the SUNY’s before, they really do seem like great options. Do u guys think SUNY Buffalo and Albany would be good choices? Any others?

Oh, and I don’t think I’ll be getting any financial aid. But I’m definitely not rich or anything, so any school that costs over 30k with room and board would probably not be feasible.

I’ll really try to get those grades up as humanly possible before I apply. I think I’ve done really well this last semester. I’d love to give these schools an incentive to take a chance on me=]

oh and diontechristmas, i love ur sn. he is sick… if he was coming back next season i think I would have to come to temple (assuming i got in of course.)

Look at Columbia University.
You would have a respectable chance to be admitted there.

I strongly doubt it.

You have many other more realistic options, especially if you get really good grades from now on.

I wish he could come back too, but unfortunately, he’s exhausted his NCAA eligibility. He’ll be in the NBA, though, so that works.

6foot4, don’t put yourself down, everyone told me my essay sucked so that didn’t help, I barely participate in any extracurriculars and show no leadership in anything. My SAT is basically the same as yours. As long as you put your best effort senior year and show that you are making an improvement in your study skills, you should be competitive at better schools than you are right now.

Definately look into the University of Kansas and the University of Iowa. Two very under-rated colleges (primarily due to location) with very solid biz programs.

I would also probably but UIndiana as a good reach for you as it has a top ten business program nationally.

SUNY Buff is a great choice if you can get in. My sister had better grades than that, but much lower SATs and is doing really phenomenally there. Even though you didn’t do well enough for credit on those APs, colleges will look favorably that you were enrolled in those classes-- although a 1 is pretty hard to achieve, and that score on comp + your writing SAT suggests you may want to get some work on your writing in general before college to make sure you’re prepared for success once you make it to college.

An upward trend your first half senior year will be looked at favorably as well.

Thanks everyone you guys are really helpful. I have a few friends at SUNY Buff and they seem to like it, so I think it will be high on my list. As far as the AP English test is concerned, i got frustrated halfway through the mc section and started filling in random bubbles. I didn’t bother to answer the essay questions to the best of my abiliity either. All of this obviously contributed to me scoring a 1. However, the SAT writing was extremely difficult for me, and i was guessing most of the time even with my best efforts. Any advice how to going about improving this? I shoud prob get back to schoolwork now… it’s a slow day in sports marketing=]
