The quality of Rice’s academic life and the Residential College System are heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice?

When I got into high school, it advocated test-oriented education, unlike my primary school and my junior middle school which gave me numerous opportunities to access science. For instance, they provided me with numerous videos of popular science and further developed my interest in natural science through vivid instructions.

In the high school, the ambiance was totally different. We kept on doing exercises rather than explored a topic deeply. When studying calculus, we only needed to remember the basic rules of differentiation instead of understanding how they derived from. However, I was not satisfied with this pedagogy. I found out that some formulae were not too complicated to deduce as my teacher said. From searching information of calculus on internet, I could deduce them by using some simple methods. For instance, with regard to the derivative of exponential function, I first needed to add an accessorial function for substitution and knew the definition of natural logarithm. Then I just made delta x tend to zero to conclude the formula. In the halogenation of benzene, I asked my chemistry teacher about the specific reaction mechanism and detected the effect of some Lewis bases. As long as some puzzles are not beyond my knowledge range too far, I will attempt to solve them.

Via profound research, I can gain more knowledge. Even though I did not take as many exercises as my classmates did, my scores were higher than the majority of theirs. Through more thorough study I can understand knowledge point more lucidly. In the grade 10, I perused an ABC of calculus from my deskmate for interest. After my previous effort in mathematics, calculus lessons were easy to understand for me in the grade 11. Moreover, comprehending knowledge is more valuable than memorizing it. If we just memorize the formulae, we will forget them soon after examinations. Because I learn knowledge with more effective way, I still can make use of binomial theorem to write out every term of the algebraic expansion of powers of a binomial readily even after a year.

No matter how many challenges or how many opportunities these schools offered to me, my perspective is unvarying. My value is to make my life more effective. To gain effectiveness when tackling difficulty, I must keep composure. As confronting trouble, I need to think over it-- contemplating what will happen after I dispose thing in this way. By this means, I will work out seemingly tough problems.

I confronted such dilemma in a volunteer work. When I volunteered in metro station, one of my tasks was responsible for entry of auto gates. The metro station I worked at is among the top 3 crowded stations in my city having nearly 50 thousand passenger traffic daily. By taking advantage of overcrowdedness, some adults used student cards to pass through auto gates for economy. According to the station regulations, they must pay the penalty for fare dodging. However, when I indentified a man using student card by noticing light on the gate-- while one uses student card to get past auto gates, the light will shine, he turned out to be a staff of metro company. At the moment, a difficulty arose. I could either stop every suspect people, but it might trouble them, or shut my eyes to such misdeed shirking my responsibility. Yet, choice could not be so extreme; by attentive observation, I found an alternative. I recognized the indicator light gave out light with different colors when people swiped different cards-- student card shined with orange, staff card shined with red. Besides, the distinct exterior green color of student card facilitated me to distinguish it from other kinds of cards. In this manner, I can fulfill my duty more efficacious.
