Looking Back

This thread is inspired by completelykate’s response to herself in the past. I think it would be interesting to see what we thought we were going to do at CMU, and what we are doing now. Just for fun.

For me, I came in thinking I could do an ECE/BME double major with a robotics minor. I am now going for a ECE + CS dual degree. I tell you, CMU is a pretty crazy place.

Haha. Oh dear.

I came to CMU expecting to be a creative writing/HCI double major with a minor in design.

As it turns out, design is not only extremely selective, but not very relevant to game design in terms of general principles. So I made up my own minor with some friends (video game design) which is being added to the course catalog this coming fall.

I didn’t change things too much compared to most of my friends. I’m still a CW/HCI double.

I also planned to graduate in four years and go to the Entertainment Technology Center. However, as it turns out now, I’m likely going to graduate a semester/year early and take some time off to travel. I no longer need to go to the ETC, since I have a job waiting for me after college. I’m really happy at CMU, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. :)

Way back ages ago when I started, I planned on majoring in materials science & engineering and getting a minor in either physics or chemistry. I wound up getting my BS in MSE and a minor in physics. Graduated a semester early and wound up working for a professor at CMU for the next nine months before starting grad school.

I came to CMU for CS and that is what I will be leaving with. I can’t say much academically at this school has really surprised me / let me down in any way. I suppose I owe that partially to being an obsessed CCer back in the day.

The deviation in my initial trajectory was definitely going greek freshman fall (literally out of nowhere). Since then my path has not really varied at all, and I feel I could be described quite plainly as a frat boy (at cmu mind you) studying computer science.

I was a very involved athlete in high school, and I originally had intentions to play soccer and/or run track on the varsity teams here. I quickly realized that it would not be possible to achieve my academic goals while dedicating the time that these activities would require. I suppose it could have been a decision of greek life vs athletics, but for whatever reason I chose the former.

I too am in a position where I can graduate early. Had I not taken a breather this spring, I could have pushed for as soon as next semester (2.5 years). I’m curious to see what I end up doing to fill my remaining time (or if I embark on travels in the spirit of completelykate). I am well aware that CMU has a plethora of activities to offer, and perhaps I’ll take the time to branch out as I am beginning to notice a “been there, done that” feeling set in.
