Looking For A New Coffee Maker

Friend’s husband is in the coffee business (invented a gizmo that all baristas know)–his favorite coffee maker is a Moccamaster. It is also recommended by America’s Test Kitchen. I have one in our vacation home and like it very much.

We have a newish Moccamaster. The only complaint I have is that for large pots, we sometimes have grounds spillover. We’re probably doing something wrong as I know they are well regarded.

Uh-oh! I had no idea I “NEEDED” a new coffee maker, but after clicking on the Russell Hobbs link, apparently I do!

Godson earned a small fortune selling Nespresso for a local Williams Sonoma, during college. I can’t give an opinion besides how much I like the Keurig. I don’t like stale coffee. I buy intense beans and ground fine-ish. And have a fabulous cafe around the corner, which uses Illy and brews their coffee in the big ol’ Italian machine.

We did Melitta pour over way back in the 70’s. Fine, but Ilike mine hotter and it cools during the slow pouring over. JMHO.

@abasket, please let m know which one you get, and how it compares to your previous one. I have a very high end espresso machine that I use every day, but my husband is using the 4 cup Krup machine I got when I married my first husband, back in 1987. I’ve been thinking of getting him a new one whether he wants it or not.

I wish we still had our circa 1985 Krups coffeemaker! It was the best but finally bit the dust 2 years ago. Loved that coffeemaker. So simple and sturdy.

We have had great luck with Bonavita. No frills but makes a great cup of coffee. I would suggest a model with a glass pot as opposed to the glass insulated stainless carafe which are more trouble than they are worth.

The value of these makers is in the high temp (they put the focus of the unit on a high quality, high temp heater rather than electronic bells and whistles) that they brew the coffee, extracting the oils and flavors of the beans. Some models even have a pre-soak feature allowing the grounds to bloom before brewing. In addition, they have a patterned showerhead. All of these features are designed to mimic the benefits of a pour-over without the effort.

Again, the majority of models are very simple and don’t have a lot of the timing, drip stop, etc. features of other brewers. But they are very reasonably priced, make great coffee, and due to their simplicity, last.

They are working on a fully recyclable pod currently.

Keurig® Recyclable K-Cup® pods are here and by the end of 2020,
100% of our K-Cup® pods will be recyclable.

I’m told by a Swedish coffee connoisseur I know that the Moccamaster is the preeminent coffee maker.

No doubt, but probably too big and too pricy to meet abasket’s criteria.

Yes, not interested in paying mega bucks for something that gets minimal to moderate use.

Still looking! I put it on the shelf for awhile (in my mind  ) but need to pick up the search again. I really don’t want a full sized pot! I’m stuck on this!

I appreciate that they make a 4 cup size - but frankly, a 4 cup size is really a 2 people serving. I’m on the hunt for that 5-8 cup size…which really = 3-4 cups of coffee!

Penney’s has a sale on. The above is a little bigger than maybe you want, but is fairly compact. I like my Cuiseinart one a lot, but it is single cup. I have my old electric percolator one for company.

I think I like your old one betterment, but this one is 5 cups:

This one is interesting. Not TOO big and options for smaller quantities (though I suppose most makers are). I like the stainless and I like the glass carafe. NEVER heard of the brand. And the reviews seem to be referring to a different pot? One that can do the Keurig type cups???

I’ll have to investigate more:

@abasket

Sorry, but that looks like a plain old drip coffee maker just like a Mr. Coffee but stainless. If that’s what you plan to,buy…go with a name brand familiar.

Moccamaster! Bought at Goodwill for $20!

@thumper1, well that’s what I would have said about my current appliance, a Zojirushi and it has remained one of the top recommended smaller makers!

I admit to being over selective about items that are going to be out in view in my house and wanting them to look nice (at a reasonable price). I don’t need fancy but $$ isn’t the only consideration.

I’d love to find a Moccamaster for $20! - if you find another one I’ll pay shipping!

Your old one has some character @abasket.

The other one looked like a stainless Mr. Coffee.

I don’t know…I guess if it were me, and I had been happy with the coffee it made…I would get another of the same coffee maker. I am not one who likes to mess around with the quality potential of my coffee!

It actually looks sort of cheap in person - plastic like. I’m up for a change! I’m not a coffee expert - I use it only on the weekend for myself (make my one cup at work during the week) and then when my kids stay (fairly often) or family stops by more often.

I’ll be honest I kind of hate the look of the “basic black” Mr. Coffee or otherwise! I’m sure there are some makers that make a good cup of coffee AND look good.

I am skeptical of that brand. Who on the planet would use the FDA logo on a product that clearly does not need an FDA approval. Hmmm…
