Looking for advice on full tuition aid/scholarship

Hi guys.

I am an international student from the UK. I am looking into applying for the academic year of 2016-17 to study education. I have extensive experience in the volunteering and work sector of travel for the past four years. And am hoping to apply to universities on the West Coast. Wanted information and guidance on the financial aid for full tuition, as I can pay for my board, travel, visa extensions etc. Any advice, help?

Also I know that the SAT is not a must for universities, but if i am applying to any scholarships or aid, is it worth sitting the SAT for an extra bonus to my application?

Thanks a lot.

Which schools are you looking to apply to as many of the west coast offer little in the way of financial aid to international students - what are your motives for studying education in the US? Are you looking to teach in the US?

Im not too sure whether I will be able to teach in the US once I have graduated from a degree there. As the visa options are difficult for UK residents. I want to study in the states, because its always been a dream. The course that I am looking into at one of the Oregon Universities is such a great fit for me. I am currently trying to not get too overwhelmed with the sat studying, researching, personal statement writing; when I feel like I dont even know if i can get financial aid to study yet??

Oregon has a unique culture and is not for everyone. You should plan a visit to Oregon and ask all your questions directly to the financial aid and admissions offices. I can’t imagine state schools giving much aid to internationals. They view out-of-state (OOS) candidates as full-pay students. We found private colleges to be cheaper that OOS colleges.

Totally. Thanks a lot for that. So the Private colleges seem to give more funding for international students. I feel like visiting and talking in person to someone from some of the universities will be easier. Its just not as easy with costs of flights etc. Do you think thats a better option than just emailing and asking?

SAT scores matter for admission to most universities.

SAT scores are also essential for merit scholarships at most colleges.

What does “extensive experience in the volunteering and work sector of travel” mean?

I think you need to do extensive research before planning a visit. Visiting will not affect your aid. I do not agree with the poster who seems to think that college campuses in Oregon are particularly different than anywhere else.

Many times aid depends on what you have as far as income and assets in your family. Getting full tuition can be had if you have need and you are applying to meets full need universities, which are about 60 very select uni’s and even those won’t always meet need for internationals. Public schools are very unlikely to meet need or give you full tuition. Getting full tuition on merit depends on having very top level ‘merit’ in terms of what the school recruits, and that includes objective data like A levels and test scores, as well as possibly talent. I wonder why you think you would be able to get it. It is worth looking but just not that easy.

What program are you looking at? Be aware that SAT is absolutely required at a great many universities, but at others not.

Thanks a lot for the write up BrownParent. I want to study education, bachelors in Educational learning in elementary and secondary schools. I am aware that I will need to study for the SAT, and have started to prepare for it already.
I have good test schools from my high school grades and my A levels also. I just feel my essay needs to be of great context and I guess just searching really hard for the aid. I hope that it can be an obtainable source/dream.

So you think I should be looking at private schools, also. Even though the tuition fees are almost, always double for internationals? But it seems there scholarships and international aid is much higher?

Cheers

Why do you want an undergraduate degree in education in the United States? Would you even be able to work in the United States as a teacher after graduation?

Why do you want to study elementary education in US schools if you do not intend to teach in the US? If it is your dream to study in the US there are thousands of courses which offer transferable skills rather than something with such a narrow specialism. You can look at the cost of uni in the UK and find something comparable in the US without aid or look at the private colleges and universities that tend to offer more in terms of merit and financial aid. I suggest you attend a Fullbright seminar in London and go to the college fair in September to give you an idea of what is available.

Private schools do not charge int’ls double.

Not very many schools provide aid to int’ls. Are you looking for merit scholarships (based on GPA or SAT) or need based aid, (based on parents’ info)?

Either way, you’re going to have to take SAT I or SAT subject tests, but most likely SAT I tests.

Where do you plan to teach? What country?

How much can your parents pay annually for your college education?

ETA…looks like you are currently a HS senior. You absolutely need to take the SAT or ACT tests. Some private schools also require SAT 2 tests…but you are sure mighty late to be taking those for this admissions cycle.
