Looking for cheap, safe motel to stay in Boston proper or in a close Boston suburb?

.48 miles-- very nice, safe and easy walk. Where in Boston will you take the T to? What stop? Riverside is the starting point for the D line and you will always get a seat. The D line is the best of the T Green lines. As I recall, there may also be an express commuter bus into Boston from the Riverside stop. Also, I believe the major Bus lines like Greyhound depart from Riverside.

I commuted downtown from this stop for many years a very long time ago. I think it varies time wise. I don’t really recall how long, but I think maybe 30-40 minutes. It isn’t the distance, it’s just the number of stops.

If you are up for a good walk, you could walk from the Walker House to the Train Commuter Rail in Auburndale. I’m not sure how long this would take.

I think many would feel that the D line Riverside commute from Newton to Boston is reasonable.

My kids like spacious room and I don’t like to be so compacted in Boston so we stayed out a way a little bit because we had a car. Embassy Suites near Waltham was the best experience, 2BR with king sized beds. 20 minutes from Boston

http://embassysuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/massachusetts/embassy-suites-boston-waltham-BOSWSES/index.html</a></p>

Thanks, for providing the information, peacefulmom! I was going to estimate around 30-45 minutes from the Riverside Station, but it would depend on where your final destination was. And yes, you would always get a seat!

That Embassy Suites is well over $100 a night. The OP is looking for something in the $50 range.

Beacon Hill Friends House is $85/night in the center of Boston. Make reservations well ahead of time http://bhfh.org/reservations/</a></p>

questbest, I really don’t know what the specifics of the Boston hostels are. I suggest visiting their web sites.

BTW, the UUA used to have two great houses on Beacon Hill with low rates, but I’m not sure whether they are still available.

Thank you very much to everyone who gave advice…I will look into them all.

Checked to see and, unfortunately, the UUA is closing.

Questbest. It sounds like you are going to Boston for a reason. If this is for business, medical purposes, repeat recreation , or any other thing involving some organization, you should contact them. They likely have had this question asked of them before for folks who have to come numerous times.

I may also check craigslist to see if people make a room in their homes available to rent…only problem is I don’t really know the safe areas in Boston and its suburbs

^^I’m sure people on this forum can help you with the safe areas around Boston.

Airbnb also has folks renting rooms.

If you post the areas where the rental rooms are located, there are lots of people from the Boston area on here who can give you advice.

I would use Airbnb, not Craigslist, to find a room in a private home, because the former offers reviews from people who have actually stayed there. With Craigslist, you’d be flying blind.

And now Warren Buffett has chimed in with a vote for Airbnb!
<a href=“Warren Buffett Airbnb: Berkshire Hathaway tries to lower costs at its shareholder meeting in Omaha, Neb.”>http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2014/04/09/warren_buffett_airbnb_berkshire_hathaway_tries_to_lower_costs_at_its_shareholder.html</a></p>

I have tried to check for availability on Airbnb and every date I have selected states “no availability” for every room I have tried…is there a way for me to post what I am interested (location and price) on Airbnb and be emailed if a room is available in my price range on a particular date?

Could your price range be the issue on airbnb? Boston is expensive. If you are only searching for. $50 rooms, and the majority are $75, you won’t get many hits. Try increasing your piece point just to see if the availability increases.

Keep in mind, also, that Boston is one huge college town. There is an “event” happening practically all the time, and particularly on weekends. Business travelers use the town during the week.

Again…if you are going repeatedly for a specific function, class, business, medical…contact those folks. They should be able to give you some direction.

Thanks thumper…I will increase my price point.

Also wondering…Does Airbnb have an application where I can fill out what I am looking for in advance and then they notify me via my email if anything comes available in my price range?

@Consolation, DH is picking up 16-year-old DD in Spain at the end of her study-abroad semester in June. They are going to travel around Spain for a week or so. Do you have to make reservations for hostels ahead of time, or can you usually get a room easily with no advance notice?

It depends on the time of year and location. In June, hostels will be fairly full in most places that are not out of the way. So I would advise making some reservations. Check out HostelingInternational and HostelWorld.

Also be aware that most hostels have single sex dorm rooms of various sizes, so they might need to find a spot than can accommodate each of them separately. If the want to get one room together, it will probably be designed for 4 people, but they might be able to take the whole thing (at a higher rate, of course).
