I will be visiting Boston frequently and am looking for a room (for a few nights at a time) in a safe area that is inexpensive. Does such a thing exist?

Thank you for any help or suggestions!

Where in Boston? If you’ll be near Harvard Square, The Irving House is inexpensive and charming. Safe area.

The John Jeffries House is safe and clean and pretty inexpensive. We really like it.

We used to stay at the Walker Center when our D was in college in the Boston area. It’s in Newton, but close to the Riverside MBTA station. Nice neighborhood/area. The breakfasts are fabulous!

The Midtown and the Buckminster were where we always stayed.

Another vote for the John Jeffries House. Good location on the red line right near Mass General Hospital. And a short walk to my favorite Thai restaurant on Charles Street…the King and I.

I often stayed in one of the hotel chain properties in the ring of northern suburbs; Burlington, Lexington, Woburn, Waltham. Route 128 runs right through all of them and provides quick access by car to Boston proper. Wyndham, Sheraton, Sierra Suites, etc.

Thanks everyone! I will look into all the suggestions…

Is it possible to find a room for around $50 per night or am I dreaming? I will be traveling alone and really only need a room and a clean bed.

In Boston? I think you are dreaming. If you are looking at a hotel situation, $50 would be tough to find.

I wonder if there are any hostels, or maybe a YMCA with rooms.

Boston is an expensive area. Airbnb might be your only option in that price range, and if you find a place you like, you could keep coming back to it.

I think you might be able to find a place to park your car overnight for $50!

I’m sorry, but I think this might be a challenge at $50. Do you have any friends/alumni/professors/relatives that could network for you? Perhaps someone could rent you a room in their home if they have an extra one. Good luck!

If you are going to be coming repeatedly, perhaps this is for a specific reason…and the folks who are part of that reason can help you find a room to rent each time you come.

Thanks for all the responses…so what is considered reasonable rate in Boston? I will be coming fairly frequently and was hoping not to have to spend $100 each time just for a place to sleep.

The Walker Center I mentioned earlier has a single room with a shared bath for $55, which includes breakfast. For a suite with a private bath it’s $85. No TVs, and it’s out in Newton, but it’s close to public transportation and is in a nice area.

We have stayed at hostels in the US and Europe.

Pilots and flight attendants have this kind of situation often. If is very common to get a crashpad. Usually it is close to the airport, and a couple hundred dollars a month per person, no matter how many days you stay there. The crashpads range from nice houses with just a few people sharing (expensive), to an apartment with several people sharing, even “hot beds”, with everything inbetween. Hot bedding is when there are several beds in an apartment, usually a few per room, and whomever gets there first gets the bed. That is the cheapest option. Not usually a problem, because all of the occupants are never in town at the same time, with some people there only a few days a month. They often will rent to non flight crew on a monthly basis, if they have a situation like yours.

My son (non pilot) rented a crashpad in Memphis, from an older lady. She rented to just two people, and he shared the upstairs of her house with another guy, had his own bedroom and plenty of privacy. He was there for two months, and paid $400 per month. The lady was thrilled, as she said that if she couldn’t rent out her rooms, she’d have to go back to work at age 70. It was very safe and quiet. I think there are many older people who are looking to rent out a room in their house for extra money, especially if you weren’t going to be there often. Probably Craigslist would be a good place to start, or google crashpads Boston.

college-query, just wondering how long it takes to take the T from Newton into Boston…is there a T stop close to the Walker Center? Thanks so much!

consolation…I stayed in hostels in my single days in Europe. Are the hostels in Boston large rooms that sleep multiple people or are there single rooms? Do all age groups stay there or is it mostly for the “under 30” age group? Thank you!

I found a bedroom in a house to rent in my D’s college town in CA for $49 through airbnb. It’s worth looking into.
