Hello, Im a new college parent and my son really wants to come to Dallas (from Oklahoma) to SMU or UT. But Ive heard its very expensive! Ive also heard of ‘grants’ for tuition from local businesses, etc. Does anyone know anything or ideas on this topic that could help out a newby to the scene? Thank you kindly!

The very best grants and scholarships are awarded by the colleges directly. Is your son a junior in HS now? If so, is he competitive for scholarships from SMU and UT?
If he is a senior…it’s a little late to,be looking for substantial scholarship awards.

Do you mean grants from a business that the student works for? There are some companies that pay for their employees’ educations…altho fewer and fewer are doing this or are giving much money…maybe $5k per year.
Or do you mean random businesses near SMU or UT that are handing out awards to various students for SMU or UT? I doubt there are local businesses that do that other than just token small one time awards to local school kids to be used at any school.
@dsmichael Since you are a newby, I highly recommend you read the book “The College Solution” as well as the website by the same name. The author really does a good job explaining how financial aid and scholarships work and I used her advice with both of my children. The author is Lynn O’Shaughnessy. She also keeps up to date on the latest developments so she has very good resources. Read as much as you can about the college application process and fin aid/scholarships and it will help you and your child immensely. Also be sure you child gets working on his/her applications this summer and applies early action to as many schools as possible. It really helped my children in getting scholarships and admissions to affordable colleges. Be sure to run the net price calculator for each school on your child’s list and have them only apply to schools that are affordable.
