Looking for floorplan/furniture placement program or website

I like to play with furniture placement on paper so I can see how the room will look. I use to draw out the room on graft paper to scale and make little furniture cuts out to make sure my new furniture ideas would fit in the room. Now I am trying to buy furniture for the home my son is moving to out of town. I can not keep driving there to measure and make sure a piece of furniture will fit.

Is there an easy computer program that will work for a Mac, or even a website that will allow me to play around with furniture placement? I do not want an elaborate program, just something simple to use for the den and bedroom. I would like to be able to draw the room where I can place doors and windows and then be able to add furniture templates to see if it all will fit.

See if this is what you are looking for. It is from the Home and Garden website.

Have you tried google’s sketchup? It might seem a little complex at first, but play around with it for a while and its fun for 3-D drawing of buildings, interiors, etc. And it does work on a mac.

The one on the Home and Garden website does not work on a Mac, but I will try it on one of the kids laptops.

Sketchup looks way more involved than I need! I don’t care about 3D, although if would be cool. I just need to see how crowded the room will be when my son insists on this huge chair and a half recliner along with his big screen TV he has been saving for forever! The bedroom is a bit tight, so I want to make sure we can fit a dresser in without it sticking out in front of a door. I have all the measurements for the rooms along with the location of all windows and doors. I could just draw it out on paper like in the past, but thought it might be more fun to try on the computer.

Oooh, I would love to have one that worked on a Mac.

My folks are moving from their home to a small two bedroom apartment in a retirement community. Trust me, it is even harder to convince your parents that a beloved piece of furniture won’t fit than your college kid!!

I’ve done the free 8 hours on Sketch-up (Is the google thing new?) and still don’t feel comfortable. There are lots of Home Architect type programs. I use 3-D Home Architect and hate it. The old version was fine, but the new one is much less intuitive and has too many bells and whistles. I just want to be able to draw a floor plan and then move a camera around to get a simple 3-D picture. I can’t remember if you can change sofa and chair dimensions. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve used the program. I really think graph paper and cut-outs are just as easy most of the time. Or a big roll of architectural tracing paper.

I found one online that is pretty basic but did allow me to change the size of a piece of furniture. I still might hand draw like in the olden days, but this site worked also. I liked that I could save my work.
