I am just a sophomore ,but I want some goals for motivation.
I am from RI, but want to live in California(San Jose area)…So I either is great.
I want to go for either Computer Science or Physics.
My GPA is like a 3.3-3.4 unweighted for JUST my sophomore year, but my school does weight it.
I am in all Honors/AP classes except English(I can’t write)
I only have 2 year of foreign language, but I will have 5-6 Science Credits.
On the Sophomore PSATs, I scored 65s across the board for a score of 195.
For ECs, I got Band, Mock Trial, Debate Team and Math Team.

Besides the highly selective schools in CA (Stanford, Berkeley, Caltech, Harvey Mudd):

San Jose State has a great CS program.

Check out UC Santa Barbara for physics.

I am willing to work…until I drop

Work hard and reach for your dreams…but realize that the college name will, at best, contribute <1% of what you achieve in life.

I want to go to a college where we discover breakthroughs and new technology all the time too…

Well the best CS prgrams in the New England and California area are MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley, Cal Tech.

Not quite new England but Cornell’s and CMU’s are also top notch.

And in New England, Harvard and Brown also have good cs programs.

However none of these schools are exactly easy to get into.

Put it this way, MIT is my dream school…I will apply no matter what
Stanford, Is awesome and is in area I like
UC Berkeley is simply don’t have a chance, not high enough GPA and I am OoS

Massachusetts is home to 65 public and private colleges and universities. Some of the well-known ones are Harvard, MIT, Holy Cross, Tufts, Boston College, Boston University, and the University of Massachusetts.

I don’t know about the California or Physics half but schools I would put on your list that will give you a terrific technical education while having a more reasonable possibility of getting in - RPI, WPI, Northeastern, and BU.

Son is a CS in engineering right now - rising senior. He applied MIT, UPenn, Cornell, Tufts, RPI, WPI, Northeastern, Syracuse and Norwich - 4 years ago. So those were the schools w/ CS that best appealed to him while keeping in mind reach, match, safety.

I think I have a fit school in both Boston University and Northeastern if I can bring my grades up it bit.

I am also looking at U Mass Amherst too.

What is my chance of getting into say UC:SC?

a lot of these suggestions seem right on – especially with the fact that the school you choose will have very little to do with what you achieve later on in my opinion – you should check out wpi if youre looking in mass as i think it might be a good match

UC Santa Cruz?
Probably decent shot…but keep in mind, UCSC isn’t exactly known for their engineering/computer science programs. UCSB, although further south than your target San Jose and being more selective, has better programs for what you’re looking for.

Also, UCs are known to give very little financial aid to out-of-state students…so, you’ll pay a premium for the UCs (and Cal States [eg. San Jose State] as well…although Cal States are cheaper than UCs)

Again, The more research a college does the better IMO
The one who will shape the future the most the the one I want to get into.

I gave UCal : SC while they meh by UCal standards, they have the NASA Ames Research facility…

Disregard location if you find a college that meets this stranded

Glad to see some of these schools are making sense. I saw your interest in MIT on another thread and while it is an awesome school, you want to have a plan that includes a variety of schools.

Another school we looked at (south of NE though) was Leheigh. Husband and I loved it while son decided not to apply. Drexel in Phili I feel like a similar to northeastern. We did not look at it since son like Northeastern and was likely to get in.

D who is looking at schools now is looking in a very different academic direction. But one school we will be looking at that I have heard good things about is UConn. I don’t know about your specific interests but what intrigues her is it seems to have everything.

. I saw your interest in MIT on another thread and while it is an awesome school, you want to have a plan that includes a variety of schools

I mean it is worth a shot
I don’t want to got to college for the prestige or the money, but to learn and research and eventually land a nice jobs in Cali at a nice big technology company or maybe a government job.
And it is terrible to know I am going to compete with people who want the prestige and money.
I honestly want to go to these colleges because they will provide me with a better education and opportunities.

I should also note I like research which leads to the possibility of graduate school…I DEFIANTLY want a school that if I do well in I can maybe transfer or go to graduate school at a MIT or a Stanford or something along those lines if I chose I am willing to make the financial and time sacrifice in the future.

***, This board doesn’t allow html?

anyone else?

northeastern, bu, wpi. and umass are probably good bets as has been mentioned.

You could also try rpi, rit and u rochester, although new york not new england.

Don’t know much about cali schools, maybe something in the clairmont consortium. The UCs are probably unlikely out of state, I forget how competitive the non ucla and berkeley ones are for out of staters.

New York is fine

Also anything Along the East and West Coast are fine really
Hell anywhere is fine I just perfer these areas.

Sorry, I am just obsessing

I am just upset because I go down the list of famous computer scientists and it is all the same… They normally all attended
MIT
Caltech
Standford
UCal Berkley
Urbana-Champaign,
University of Chicago

at some point in time
I find it depressing
