Looking for Good Private Colleges that have the following....

Hey I know the question is very broad but I want to be as thorough as I can be.

I will be going to a community college and then planning on transferring to a private college later.

I am currently going and looking at schools in my State (Maryland) and talking to students and staff to get a better idea of what each school is like and what GPA I need to get in.

What I would like to know is if there are any resources I can use to look for these private colleges to help narrow things down a bit. Or if anyone here can recommend private colleges that have the following.

what I want in the private college is the following:

small/medium sized private college

small class room size like 20 students

friendly small community

has frats and sororities or GREEK life

has great social life/ parties preferably not a bar school

has either club team that students take very seriously that you can join but have to make a cut to get into it.

or varsity division 2 or 3 team that you can join for soccer and lacrosse

any one know of good ones ? help or advice much appreciated

You’ll want to check academics first. Especially check how the school handles transfer credit from community colleges, including for your intended major. While state universities like UMCP, UMBC, etc. are likely to have pre-made articulation agreements with community colleges, transfer credit is likely to require individual evaluation at private universities, which may mean that you may get less transfer credit than you expect.

Also, check to see how many transfer students the private universities admit, since some do not take many at all (unlike many state universities).

Of course, run the “net price calculator” on each school’s web site (public or private) to get an idea of whether each school will be affordable.

thanks for the input. And your right a lot of students find out the hard way that many of the credits / classes they took are not transferable. and miss the admission deadline as a result of not having enough transferable credits. I am already on that and will make sure my counselor is on board with all the colleges that I am looking at.

I will make sure I ask how many transfer students the private universities admit.

What if I don’t know what my intended major will be?

I have my own business (internet marketing) and have enough funds to pay for my college in cash. I don’t really need a degree but I might down the road you never know.

But most of my motivation to got back to school is for the social life and to make great friends.

I am however a bit older then most students 25 years old. I will be 26 by the time I transfer. do you think that is a problem?

Maybe Towson might be good for you?

hey modelgeek 282 I took a look at towson and I did not like it very much plus it is a public college

thanks for your input though

You will eventually have to figure it out. Most schools accept transfers primarily at the junior level, by which time students are expected to declare their majors, and transfer admissions selectivity may vary by major. You should have completed the lower division prerequisite courses for your major by the time you transfer as a junior.

Note that class sizes in upper division courses will generally be a lot smaller than in lower division courses. As an incoming junior, you will be taking mostly upper division courses, so even a large public university may have acceptably small class sizes for you (unlike in the freshman chemistry or economics courses with hundreds of students).

I suppose I should mention that I am open to colleges outside the state of Maryland. Did not want to convey that I am only looking for Maryland Universities.

@UCBA I will talk to a lot of the admissions people. Most have said I can transfer with 30 transferable credits. So I really hope I can transfer as a sophomore and get into the college that I like and spend more time in it to make friends. Rather then transferring as a junior and only having tow years to make friends.

I think I can do it if I keep my GPA up but I will as the transfer admissions if I have to declare my major or not
