We are visiting Carthage in a few weeks. Would love insights about dorms, food, and wifi from anyone who knows someone attending. The reason I ask is that I have read a few student reviews saying that these areas are below average at Carthage and these can be difficult to spot during a visit.
I know a current student there. Dorms are fine, some with lake views. The student I know has chosen to live in dorms all 4 years. Food is limited but the student is also a bit particular. They are surviving.
All in all they have been very happy with the school.
Okay, here we go. She said the campus is beautiful. The food vendor is new and better than the old one. The food is good, but some kids do get bored with it. However, her child kept a meal plan all 4 years, even when living off campus.
Dorms are a mix of traditional and suite-style. Freshman and sophomores live on campus, juniors and seniors mostly live off campus. There are apartments nearby. The college used to require juniors to live on-campus too, but apparently enrollment was high so they released juniors. (I suppose that could change again.) All of the dorms run along the lake, so roughly half the rooms have gorgeous lake views.
The greek system is small with half local and half national chapters. No fraternity or sorority houses (although she said upper classmen often live together in off-campus houses that sort of function like a fraternity house).
A good chunk (45%??) of the students are D3 athletes. Her child was.
Classes are typically small and kids get to know their professors. And the professors seem to genuinely care about students and enjoy what they do.
As you can probably tell, her child had a very positive experience.
@aewlmom thank you so much for asking and providing all these super helpful details! These are positive indeed, and seems like it would be a great fit for my S25: he likes small schools, small classes, is being recruited for swimming, and is not interested in greek life at all. Oh and my son is not a picky eater at all. He can eat the same food over and over…
My friends kid is also an athlete and has loved their experience thus far. The downside is there isn’t a walkable town area really nearby and having a car is a bonus there. Lake Michigan is quite lovely.
How did your son end up liking Carthage after visiting? My D25 was accepted and we haven’t made it out there yet (we live in WA state), but it’s one of her top choices.
We haven’t visited because my S25 committed to swim at his #1 choice college in Michigan. He was accepted at Carthage as well. All I know is that Kenosha is a nice area, and a train ride away from Chicago and Milwaukee where there are many internship opportunities. Very cold tho, and you probably already know that Long-sleeves weather from October to May.
