Hi everyone! Not sure exatly where to put this thread so I put it here.
Anyways I’m starting to think about a special talent/ability to put on my applications. I can tell you I’m a great swimmer (like I compete and stuff like that). I’m also really goof at teaching swim lessons. Do either of these count for anything? Other than that I can’t think of anything
I’m also interested in doing something that will show schools what I’m passionate in. I plan on studying neuroscience or environmental science. I’m really interested in the psychology part of neuroscience and helping the environment. Not sure how to show that (especially because I’m not involved in anything which would show this). Any suggestions on what I could do to show this.
Also, I’m very passionate in music. I have no ability to play it unfortunately. I spend a lot of time listening and looking for new bands/artists to listen to. I’m also interested in live music and the local music scene. I try to go out to local shows often but it doesn’t always happen.
So basically I’m looking for an activity/talent that can showcase my passions. And do you guys think my ability/talent should revolve only around my passions? And should I not become too involved in the music thing considering that is definitely not something I wantto study?
Yes, both competing in swim and giving swim lessons count for something (athletics and work). For neuroscience, you could apply for internships for shadowing a doctor, or you could volunteer in a clinic or a hospital. There are so many ways to help the environment…go to a beach cleanup, join an environmental club, etc. As for music, I wouldn’t really put “goes to local shows” on your app
you need not list music at all unless you’re somehow involved in it.
There’s almost a million things you could do to showcase your passions, but please, don’t do activities just to put them on college apps. Participate in things that excite you and make you happy–those are your true passions.
what are your swim times?
Gseymour 50 yard free 25 seconds
500 free at 5:39 o think? Out of season now so I’m not exactly sure but it’s about that.
And I’m not interested in doing activities just for my app. I’m looking for things to do with my spare time that will also look good on the app
You’re doing it backwards: You don’t say, “I want [swimming] to be my passion!” and make it happen; you say, “I want to be successful at [swimming],” and somewhere along the line–probably as you’re pushing yourself to the absolute limit during a regular practice–you’ll fall in love.
Focus on being successful at the activity, not on your love for the activity; focus your energy outwards rather than inwards. Passion will follow achievement. (For more on this idea, check out calnewport.com/blog--I’m quite the groupie.)
