Hey everyone,
I am currently a student studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I came here as the price was great and the opportunities for research and internships were incredible. However, as time goes on and I made it through my first semester, my perspective has changed quite a bit. So when I came here, it was with the intent of studying Aerospace engineering. That came from my interest in space exploration and being mechanically inclined. It seemed simple. However, during my first semester I have had the opportunity to network with many people in my future career field, and discuss with upperclassmen the classes I will be taking. This has lead me to realize that I really do not want to end up being an engineer.
With that said, what do I want to do? So I currently own a very successful business which will be entering its 4th year in operation. I have realized that I find the business aspect of life more interesting than I do becoming an engineer. I do still have the goal of pursuing the engineering (or science degree). However, I want to get a minor in business and then proceed to get an MBA from UChicago. UAH is a great engineering school, but that is almost explicitly what it is known for. They are not the best on the side of business.
Aside from the degree, I simply do not feel challenged here. I sometimes feel like the only student who actually wants to learn. I am the only student in each of my classes that asks questions and strives to learn more. Most of my teachers know me on a personal level and are willing to help me out in any way possible. They have even agreed with my decision to transfer.
So far I have achieved the following at UAH:
4.0 GPA
Joined a fraternity and I currently hold an executive position, philanthropy, and financial chair
Earned over 50 volunteer hours
Started a drone club on campus
Managed my business while keeping my 4.0
My High-School stats were:
100/430 class rank
3.6 or 4.1 GPA
ACT: 31 composite, 33 super score
Multiple Leadership Activites
200 volunteer hours
Varsity track and cross-country athlete
Tennessee Boys State delegate, Supreme court justice (1 of 5 out of 600 people)
I was deferred and waitlisted to most of the selective schools last year. UChicago, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Casewestern.
So far I am applying to the same schools minus UChicago, but adding Yale as one of my professors told me that since he graduated and taught there for 14 years, plus he was a recruiter, that he can ‘heavily influence my chances’.
So my question becomes, what schools and programs might be worth applying to?
Let me know what you think!
