Looking for Safeties

I have a 4.7 weighted GPA. I’m going to be a senior this upcoming school year. I’m ranked 5th out of 739 students in my graduating class. I’ll have taken 9 AP classes by the time I’m finished with my senior year. The only stats I don’t have yet are my ACT/SAT scores. I recently took them, so I don’t have the scores but I’ll project my worst case scenario-- SAT: reading- 630; math-600 writing-620 so 1850 total. I wasn’t aware there was basically no curve on the ACT when I took it so I’m not even going to predict that. So far I think I’ve chosen Northeastern University as a safety so I’m looking at one comparable to that. I’m not really picky on location but my parents suggest I don’t go to the south since we’ve read some things about racism at universities down there. I really want a diverse school–ethnically and otherwise. Money is not a concern as of right now. Size of school doesn’t really matter, but I definitely want it to be private. I’m definitely going to major in something with science–either chemistry and taking the pre-med route or majoring in some sort of engineering. Oh and it has to be co-ed. Any input you could give would be great!

The median SAT score for admitted students at Northeastern for the freshman class of 2011 was 2015/2400. The mid 50% of SAT scores was 1890-2140. If you get an 1850 on your SAT Northeastern would hardly be a safety school. It would be a low reach as you would be in the bottom quartile of admitted students.

racism in the south, have you or your parents been to the south? it is not like in the movies! some of this countries greatest , most promising schools for students are in the “south”. I was born in NYC and I know the world does not revolve around the upper east side! you need to take a road trip!

Well, I guess it depends on where you look. On college ******* it says that the SAT scores were between 1820 and 2070.

I’m not basing my opinions about the south on Hollywood productions. I’m basing it on reviews I’ve read by students who go to these schools in the south. I never said they weren’t good schools. They just aren’t diverse, and I’ve read they have some racism.

You should look at the universities’ own websites and not those other sites that are 2 or 3 years outdated if not downright wrong.

And of course, there is no racism anywhere in America outside of the south.

That is not what I said either. I have just read it is more prevalent in the south. I don’t see why sarcasm is necessary here.

* I don’t go to the south since we’ve read some things about racism at universities down there. *

Don’t believe everything you read. You’re buying into stereotypes. And, exactly where did you “read” this??

Many/most southern univs are no different than the univs anywhere else.

Northeastern is not a safety for you. Your predicted SAT makes it match or reach. And, if you’re not 100% sure that you have all costs covered with family funding or ASSURED aid, then it’s not a safety at all.

Money is not a concern as of right now

What does that mean?

If your parents have said that they will pay $60k per year for wherever you get into, then money is not a concern. Otherwise, it is.

You can use the search tool on this site to look for “liberal-leaning” schools. In my experience liberal schools are generally more tolerant than those that are known to be conservative–no matter what part of the country they are located in. I would not worry too much about urban-versus-rural distinctions, though–many LACs in particular are islands of tolerance in places that are not otherwise known for embracing diversity.

Thank you @sally305. @mom2collegekids Yes, that is exactly what I mean when I say money is not a concern. I know what I’m saying when I say it. Oh, and be sure you quote me exactly, because that first sentence you wrote was not exactly what I said. I didn’t say that I don’t go to the south.
I’m done with college confidential anyways. Some people are helpful, but the majority are judgmental, undermining, and rude.

I got news for you bro, theres racism everywhere.
